Hello!

There's been plenty of Maui talk, but for some reason I seem unable to search for the information! I'm off for a last minute trip, arriving in Maui on Sunday. I was wondering about renting an RV (not a hotel fan) but not sure if I need a camping permit or not?

I have contacted 2nd Wind for SUP/Windsurf rental but was wondering about accommodation for a week and a car. Can anyone recommend accommodation or cheap vehicle rental for the week?

Last minute so any ideas would be awesome, thanks (even links to old posts!).

Hi Ben, one good value car or van rental is Maui Vans, try for their middle aged station wagon. I don't know about camping out. There's rooms for rent in Paia and Haiku, depends how much your budget is, you could try Aloha Surf Hostel, or Nalu Kai lodge. Good luck, hope you get lots of good maui breeze

I would not recommend unauthorised camping on Maui, you might get to meet some locals

Yeah,

Don't be tempted to camp at Kanaha. Some do it but its super dodgy - petty theft and more serious crime is very common there. You'll see...

Better to hire a car and stay somewhere cheap like Haiku if you're on a budget.

Sounding like a bad idea! Is it ok on the specific campsites, or even then it's not great. Not interested in too much agro!

Hi Ben, I've recently booked a trip to Maui for October and spent some time to check various options for car rentals and accommodation..I've ended up booking my flight and car as a package thru Hawaiian Airlines and my accommodation from AirBnB.

So here is my advice based on my recent but single experience:

1- Accommodation, check AirBnB and www.vrbo.com, they have a fair range of options...have a look at wotif.com as well.

2- Car... I booked a mid-size SUV (Toyota RAV4 or similar) from Dollars as a flight+car package thru Hawaiian Airlines that is around US$120 per week but that is in October..if I didn't have a good package I would have booked from kimosrentacar.com or www.mauivans.com which were recommended by some people on various forums in the past...I've also been warned about the queues at the airport for collecting rental cars from mainstream agencies (thanks for the advice Yuppy).

Also, have a look at this thread: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/MAUI-best-place-to-stay/
