I have a small Gaastra Poison, which I don't use very often as it doesn't rig very well on my smallest (400/19) mast, so was considering a 370/17. Don't want to spend a fortune on a mast for 1 sail, so was considering either Fiberspar Reflex 3200 or Gun Advantage Wave. Anyone know how compatible either of these would be.

got the same sort of questionhere as easty will be having the gtx 08 and as the site says 430 75%carbon sdm needed...since i just have the older masts would a 50%carbon do and doesn't have to be gaastra

I would go the Fiberspar on the Gaastra, they were the mast of choice for Gaastra sails until they started producing thier own. I have all Gaastra sails (08 Manic HD's and GTX's) and have stuck with Fiberspar for my masts.

JP, as long as the IMCS is the same (I'm guessing you have a 6.0 so should be 21) it should be close to compatable for curve, however with the lower carbon content the sail might feel a little softer in general. However, I am a bit of a believer that if you aren't at a high to very high level in you sailing you probably wont notice a great deal of difference. I am running a 100% in my GTX's.

'Compatible with other masts that are equal in length and IMCS, including standard diameter masts' this is what gaastra had footnoted on the gtx and am presuming on all sails at least they do that than most nice info material but scary this np mast fog gets my head spinning and time to put $$'s in the piggy bankif it's to work right! hi aus31 you guessed it right a 6.0 am not really on a top level but i could feel the difference in mast rebound especially when windy it's a bit heavier than a 100% but i don't really mind the weight cuz when it's windy everything seems lite..i upgrade as much as i can one piece at a time not the whole lot like a sail, mast and boom...so with that in mind i guess i'd try out the sail first and then if it does need a must will scrounge around...regards

especially the manic HD but especially the GTX's

there is plus or minus 1cm between your sail rigging correctly on any mast or feeling like crap.

outhaul comes into play too!

compatability schmatability.

if in doubt, downhaul it more and raise your boom above your comfort zone.

Yeah mate, I am very happy with all the sails I have. The GTX's on the Manta 67 absolutely fly.

The recent article in Boards magazine puts a std no to bend curve and we find the Gaastra and Maui sails masts are more to the Stiff top end of the spectrum while Powerex and fiberspar are closer to the middle but still considered stiff top and Pryde North a very flex top.

You will be ok with Fiberspar and powerex. The main issue with a 4.2 poison or manic is rotation as they do prefer a skinny mast especially in the area just above the boom where the fiberspar is quite thick in that area. As far as the GTX 08 goes the 50% carbon mast will be fine just that 75% will give better response in Gusty conditions, however sail shape should be the same.

GTX is very tuneable with small changes to the outhaul setting. You will find that it can go from pulling you over the front to completely gutless in a range of 3cm of outhaul change and moving the boom up will also help with early planing.
Like someone else said don't be afraid to pull the **** out of it in overpowered conditions, max the outhaul and drop the boom a little.

well thanks aus and gybe..considering they're all constant curve-masts..there still is a little difference in areas of flex...all these years and they still haven't standardized, i guess am just getting cautious after 2masts broken in one wk. cuz this particular sail not gaastra was mast dependent and i just followed my friends advice downhaul good and enjoy the sail but never didoh well i guess there's always a "different ball for a different racket"

Mate, I downhaul about 1cm or so above the recomended and think the sails feel and go so much better for it.

will try aus but if leech indicators don't show flop till recommended settings will pull or crank a bit more...
