Seems there's been heaps of posts about longboards lately. I've been poking around seeing what's available and thought I'd do a summary. To qualify for my list the board needs a centreboard and has to be 3m+. I figure there are four categories. Lemme know what I missed.

Nice, but the Windsurfer One Design is still in production.

BTW, the Kona One can certainly be raced, but it's not really a Raceboard. It's not as quick (unless reaching in a full planing breeze) but it's great for playing around and using like a giant freeride board

Maybe there's a special category for the Kona One and Wndsurfer One Design.

It's not a raceboard category, it's the main board options if you wanted to race.

i've been looking at the longboard second hand on their website. i miss longboard sailing.

the kona one is a nice board to sail but nothing beats cranking to windward on a race board.

I just picked up a Naish 11'4 SUP ... anyone got experience using one of those with a sail? It just has the screw hole for the mast base. I have a full range of sales from 4.7 wave up to 7 cam'd. Was wondering what the best thing to try on it is first ... I understand it doesn't plane like a windsurfer.

Mate had one and bushed it.
He used it once with a 5 mtre sail, i watched him go out on his first try in about 10 knots . did a couple of L/Board Reos, played around jibeing and tacking
and then ate it on a chest high wave.
Basically came in after 20 minutes of playing around and found a 30 cm x 5 cm compression in the top side rail maybe the board and the boom hit. I realize that this can happen to anyone , but After looking a bit closer at the 11 4 we came up with the conclusion the deck WAS WEAK. The undented timber inlay could be pushed in 5 mm no worries at all.
He only used it after that as a sub and where the screw hole and handle is located it split and was taking water within 5 or 6 surfs. This board never had a lot of use. I think Naish had some QC issues on a batch of these things cause i have heard of a few dying.
Sorry to put a negative spin on something you have just purchased.

Just picked up a Mistral Malibu on the side of the road the other day. Gave it a good scrub and she looks awesome. Can't wait to take for a burl.... but it does need a daggerboard. Anyone have any ideas for a suitable daggerboard for such an old beast.

I wonder where alot of those special open class and D2 gear went too , the landfills must have a fair share but I am sure there are many garage roof with treasures tucked away .

Div II boards are round bottom longboards. They sailed in displacement mode pretty much all of the time. The Olympic Lechner would be a good example. The jim french design would be similar. I used have a Crit dII many many moons ago.
They are really good for light winds but become a handful when the wind gets up.
Occasionally, but rarely, one comes up for sale.

I also had a Crit dII(with a Craw tuttle box mod) ,sailed it up to the late '90s,great fun in under 12 knots (max)with a 8.5 raceboard rushwind complete with a hole in the middle of the sail to tie the boom together and reduce the flex - ah them were the days(eyes glaze over and roll into the back of my head like homer)I miss it sobto be fully lit in 7-10 knots great feeling until a boat wake came along and tested your log rolling stancenewbies to the sport in the last 10+ years are missin out how much fun these big boards were,I say/beg/plead Bring 'em back

I've still got a TC Win (early Georg Lechner designed D2), an unidentified custom D2, and a Lechner (Lars Kleppich's bronze-medal winning board).

They are fantastic boards, like everyone says. The feeling of speed and efficiency in light winds is amazing, as they slice through the water like a rapier blade. I love the way the water peels off them.

You could certainly sail them in big breeze, but it took a lot of work. We had one Metro series back in the day when all the Olympic team got blown away and only one competitor (using a 5.6) finished. The Sydney-Southport, one of the big offshore races of the year, was starting about 2ks away at the time and they were measuring 40 knots ++.

Open Class. Robert Bowness built 3 of these monsters.
I think only mine and Wayne Bowness's are still alive.

The size sails seems like a 10m2 ? I wonder what size sail of todays modern race sails would be equal to the power of that old rig ?

If anyone would like to organise a round up of some of these boards for a bit of fun I would definitely consider getting the board to the event .

Yep,10.0 Racefoil Pro probably same as a 12.0 today.

Hi Fella's,
I've been out of sailboards for a long time, I still have the old Hifly 500 CS corona speed in the shed (more of a toyota crown speed I thought).and i just bought a Kona one board. Nice and light.
I weigh about 90Kgs , probably sail in about 10kts any ideas on what size sail and mast I should get?
I'm old school so keep it simple.
