Quite engaging series imo (articulate fellas) with a bit of attention to the noble art of big wave pole dancing:

It's hard to imagine sailing the 6kms upwind from Hookipa to Jaws on waveboards. Does anyone know where Turtle Bay is? It's somewhere between the two spots but I can't find any other reference to it. From 35:40.

Further to the above ... today I sailed upwind for 6 minutes on my wave gear, we were just looking for better waves, but it was a good wind and I made good progress, so when I got home I checked my GPS data and found that if I continued at that rate for 6 kms, it would take 2 hours. 6 minutes was easy but 2 hours would be a mighty effort!

I have about 1km to go upwind to a reef, it is quite alright to do when powered up (see track below) but on occasions the wind has dropped dramatically and then it is quite a chore to come back. Especially if I'm on my smallest board...

There are a couple of spots here that I would like to explore, like barrier islands, when it's windy and it's much more flat on the inside than at the barrier islands. I've heard there are good waves and I see kites out there, but they are 2 miles away from the nearest launch by water, only accessible by boat. I've sailed there and back a few times but I always pucker at the thought of something going wrong that far out where it's also known to be very sharky.

Kris, how long does it take you to get the km upwind in good conditions?
I find walking with gear gets me upwind in similar time; that's at a leisurely walk, so it could be done quicker.

I rarely push to go all the way in one go, I usually do a bit of "bump and jump" on the way and also make a few turns on a beach break etc. the way out. Looking at the GPS track I think that it would have taken about 15-20 minutes of fairly dedicated upwind sailing. Probably less if I was tacking instead of jibing, but I prefer to jibe on wave rather than tacking.

The maximum VMG was about 5 knots, but mostly lower than that, about 3-4 knots. It really is quite low compared to e.g. Formula equipment.
