So how do you stay fit when not sailing?
Please don't say, "I kitesurf!"![]()
Been wanting to get fit and back on the board/water so bought a Hobie Revo kayak thinking it should target all the right areas, paddling for the upper body (good to build up the calluses to) and the foot peddles to work the Quads, calves and ankles. Maybe drag a couple of lures while at it, doing backies may be tricky though.
Still fishing for any other ideas, so what have you got![]()
Be mentally strong when visiting the supermarket!!!
Only buy fruit/veg,nuts,brown rice and olive oil....i wish.
No buying ANY chocolate.
Remember,you reap what you sow.
That's a good idea with the old boom, a girl half Marks age told me he has one attached to his bed head, How's that been working for you Mark
?
This might sound crazy but...how about windsurfing? I mean, initially I thought you were talking about off-the-water exercise, but if kayaking is in the mix...
Yes the problem for an average working person is that we can windsurf 1-2 days a week and we want to make the most of them, so we try and stay in the water for 5-6 hours.I found that for stamina, jogging is enough. Squats for leg strenght. Then the first thing that gets sore is the arms and shoulders. The ideal solution is Pierre's, but if you cannot set it up at home you can try to lift yourself up from under a table, if you have the right table. I started with dumbells, lifting them up over my head or pulling them up from my knees, seems to have given me more resistance, I can go for longer sessions.
I'm not one for training but before going to Maui last year I borrowed a rowing machine, did 20 minutes a day for 4 weeks, went to Maui and sailed for 3 weeks solid without a problem.
windskate its really hard work when you have to gybe every 200mtr also no harness
Went yesterday for about 3hrs at whalan .5km run was smoking . Friggin wheels were too hot to touch when i finished. Body is so tight have cramps in legs still this morning after a radox bath. Its developing a six pack for me
Just find a carpark most sporting field light there carparks at night nobody will be there at nights . Unless they are smoking drugs & fornicating .But its nice to see the wildlife of a night.![]()
Hey Grant - it will be awesome to see you back on the water
I have been doing quite a bit of beach running followed by push ups - its cool when you get in to the trance - but i can understand that it wouldnt be everyone's cup of tea - you feel fantastic afterwards though
I cant reccomend Stand up paddle enough for all round fitness
flat water can be ok- i can take it or leave it
But i really like knee to shoulder high waves - should be plenty of those just south of the rock at a secret location - just go down when the surf is sub optimal (no crowds!) and i promise you will have a ball
something 30 inches wide by 10 ' 5 is perfect for a first board - and good all rounder in those sort of conditions -
The great thing is that the super drive of SUPS make knee high waves feel like chest high waves on a surfboard (or like being powered up down the line at scarbs)
for mental fitness i reccomend rc electric 3dflying
The extra benefit of the SUP is that when you are in the desert and the swell drops or beer day happens (small swell / trough/ no wind) the SUPS are absolutely super ballistic fun through the tomb on waist height contour runners
Probably some of my best days up north have been in these conditions - as memorable as the epic 5.0 mast high days.
^^^^ No No No
Go with my first suggestion. You will run the FASTEST you ever have.......... but still come back for more..... ![]()
Thanks for the link Lao

It looks like an excellent, well resourced training program. Very professional presentation as expected from Sean.
I look forward to putting it into practice and getting a bit quicker...
I have a piece of boom hanging outside for doing pullups then use the following method:
10-15min jog, 1min jumping rope, 15 pull-ups, 15 push-ups and repeat 3 - 4 times without the running part.
I'm with you Henry, active living and I'll double-down and include exercise into the mix are way too overrated. I never met an exercise that I wanted to do. I do what I have to do. I do get out of my office chair to go to the frig, when I could have just as well wheeled myself over to it and never leave the chair. I went to the doctor last week, paid $107.00 to have my doctor tell me I need to exercise more. I could have had someone tell me that for free. My idea of exercise is to reach for a beer, which is far more enjoyable, and it relieves my stress from having to walk over to the frig. People who exercise are absolutely crazy. They run, jump, do the Zumba, do hot yoga, and generally make asses out of themselves, while I sit back and have a brewski; enjoying the day. Who's smarter? I'm 66 years old with a one pack; there's no need for a 6 pack as I'm not chasing women anymore. I get enough exercise walking my dogs. I watch my big dog run; that exercise enough. I don't want to hurt myself because I don't like pain so I am careful about what I do. In my later years, I've turned clumsy and managed to fall down barely missing my little Yorkie. She looked at me like I was a big jerk. Wouldn't talk to me the rest of the day.
Exercise is for those people who just don't have anything else to contribute to society. People who exercise usually tell those of us who don't that we are lazy slugs. How much money did you make by playing around exercising? I knew of a man who was an accountant who was slim, trim, and ran 5 plus miles a day. He had it made, beautiful wife, lovely children, and he managed to give himself a heart attack running. He was only 35.![]()

Notwal....i'm on a watersports forum while lying down on the carpet getting my jeans dry from heater after being saturated while sailing in a storm ![]()
On the theme of using an old boom for fitness, one of the things I have done is to to cut off about 40cm of the straight section on an old boom. In the middle, drill a small hole and thread through 100-120cm of 4mm rope. Tie a couple of KGs to the rope (the small weights for dumbbells are perfect).
Then you just hold the boom in your hands (either with your elbows at your side, or arms out straight for added workout), and keep winding the boom (like a motorbike throttle) until the rope has fully coiled up and the weight is at the top. At that point switch direction and keep going until the weight has gone all the way down and back up again.....and so on... 10 mins of that and your forearms are BURNING!!!
If I have not sailed for a bit my forearms always get tired quickly, so this is a cheap and very effective way to build them up.
(pause for comments about other ways to build up the strength in your wrists/forearms.....)
