That's rather sad. I wonder how they expect to manage 'scarring' from the current event!!!!

I was there about 3 weeks ago and, yes, sailing, swimming and walking is banned. Not sure what the banning of walking on it entails. The shoreline at Halligans Bay was about 30 to 50 metres wide and supposedly you aren't supposed to walk to the waterline - that was my reading of the situation.
Sailing it may be problematic anyway. It looked very shallow for a long way, although it's supposed to be up to 3 metres or so deep. Kites would work I guess, if you are inclined to ignore the 'rules'...

when i was there, you could see where a vehicle had tried to drive 100m out across the lake, bogged in deep, another pair or tracks from another vehicle probably trying to rescue it, and then another set coming in from a different angle, probably trying to rescue the first two

there were no vehicles so somehow they got out

Certainly not banned, the big regatta is coming up and many are on the way there right now from all states.

Yeah like plywoodboy said there's a regatta on sept/Oct my mate is on his way out there, he's always trying to get me to go with him, he sails a skate.

Reading the post on FB they are sailing along the road, not the Lake

To celebrate our 25th Anniversary we hope to run our second ever Birdsville Track Race
On the last day of the 2010 Regatta the LEYC made history by conducting a yacht race along a road. Furthermore that the race was held on Australia's most iconic road - The Birdsville Track.
The race covered 3.8km of the 5km crossing with one rule - You had to sail between the road markers wherever possible!

FYI - just spent a week and accessing to sail on the north lake is tricky and only 2 locations with less than comfortable tracks in.

It's a registered Aboriginal heritage site and is a highly significant cultural place for the Arabana people. It is also known in Arabana lore to be a highly dangerous place that should not be entered without appropriate cultural authority. Under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972(External link), it is not permitted to drive a vehicle off track, sail, swim, or land a plane without permission.Venturing out onto Lake Eyre/Kati Thanda can also be extremely dangerous. The lake is vast and has significantly variable weather conditions.The South Australian outback is extremely harsh and people have died in National Parks when they have left a vehicle to find help after getting bogged on a salt lake. There have also been aircraft accidents when flying too low or attempting to land on the lake. For these reasons, recreational walking, swimming, driving, boating and landing of planes on Lake Eyre/Kati Thanda will not be allowed. Visitors are advised to abide by the NPW Act and encouraged to respect the wishes of Arabana people by viewing the lake from the designated visitor nodes, or from the air.

Honestly hadn't thought about access issues when it's wet. Make sense & who'd want a road to channel thousands of tourists to one or two points in the south.

Seems a few LT's made it to Cooper Ck for the LEYC race. Maybe 4 or 5. Good to see.
