just back from an awesome 2 weeks in Maui and wanted to thank Ash & all on seabreeze for their tips. Ash put me on to the Tony Notley up in Haiku (just above Hookipa). Tony's an expat Aussie windsurfer who never went home from his Maui holiday 20ish years ago and he & Karen have got an awesome few acre pad in the hills to call home. They'd just finished fitting out an old school bus as a studio and i was lucky enough to be their first guest, very cool & easy. If you're interested in staying there just drop them an email on dundee1967@gmail.com Perfect for a couple or solo, as I was. I also took advice I picked up on Seabreeze and enlisted Shawna Cropas for a few hours tuition to help iron out some bugs. Was well worth it. For gear I again went Seabreeze referral & used Second wind who were totally easy to deal with, with my pick of their gear.

What was the wind and weather like while you were there?
Is it still boardshorts weather or is a short wetsuit desirable?

Only in Jan-Feb you would need a neoprene top to be confortable once in a while.

Ahaha, true but even locals are in boardshort year long, except for those misty, windy days in jan/feb.

What about for snorkelling?

It's even warmer on the South and west side..where most of the snorkling is at its best.
Bring a Rashy. Water is at about 24C in winter...and probably a bit higher on the South/west side. On some occasion locals wear shorty on the north shore for windsurfing...remember mark angulo was....probably to spare his back from flop when trying mutan. ;-)
I wear a 1.5mm top when I do a dawn patrol (surfing)...and sometime a that top on some days...I go every january and I would say, I use more my rashguard.

Maui- no need for a wetsuit when I was there in August although i took a couple.

Got back from Maui too...did Shawna's clinic for 6 days and it was great! She is a great instructor who will fix the bad habits so you can progress into more advanced stuff. We had such good time on and off the water and feel I improved a lot.

We were pretty lucky with the weather; mostly on a 104 Lt Magic ride with 5.4 to 4.7 sails. We sailed at Kanaha as I am not ready for waves yet.

Some people were wearing shorties but I just needed a rashie and board shorts...the water, the air even the little rain we had on the first day were warm... but I must say I am pretty good with cold and wear a 3/2 wetsuit and a hoodie in Port Phillip bay all winter.

Managed without gloves till day 3 then used them to avoid blisters. Had bought booties just in case but didn't use them either..apart from minor cuts from coral you won't get major issues if you don't try to stand up too quickly or kick madly when waterstarting.

Used Airbnb for accommodation and that was good too.

The main reason I went there was I got envious after having seen all the posts by others :) ...and also wanted to make some progress before the Melbourne summer so that I can enjoy windsurfing more....and I am glad I did it. So if anyone is thinking about a trip to Maui, can't recommend it highly enough...I think Yuppy's deal for April is pretty cool.
