My ultrasonic needs replacing, cant find another one so was thinking about a JP formula 168. What do you think? Just want a early planning board for those 10-12knot days.

It will work, but need bigger sail, maybe .5.
Reaching speed lower, better angles up and down.
I use a 65 for up&down, and 61 for reaching, at 160 lbs., on Formula.

Fanatic Falcon Lightwind a potentially good option. I am already plotting what to do when my beloved Ultrasonic goes to Board Valhalla.

I hear the falcon takes a bit more wind to get it going then the JP light wind or the ultrasonic.
the ultrasonic is just a great board for those 10 to 12knot days with a 9.2 or 8.6, it's going to be a sad day when I finally have to get rid of it. please starboard make it again, stop with all this foiling nonsense.

Hi Ben. Where are you? I just moved from US147 to Patrik Slalom150. US was 95 wide and Patrik is 90. Gained 3l volume and lost 5cm width. On my second outing I went about 1knot faster. I also went from Tribal custom 52fin G10 to Lockwood 44carbon. Yet to try the 46&50 Lockwood fins. My US was a 2017, pre foil box and I loved it. Never thought that I'd get rid of it. The Patrik is a borrow board until my new one arrives (cheers CV19). A large slalom board will certainly cover the hole left by the US and for me the Patrik is the new duck nutz.

JP SuperLightwind is a really great board. I use my 2018 with a Severne Turbo GT 9.2 sail and get going in 10kn with my 79kg.
Look at this 360 video which I made this week (use your mouse to move around!). The wind is so low (10-12kn) that the water is just glassy, and still I get planing easily. Completely effortless sailing :-).

Hi Ben

I can't comment on the JP168, but a mate has one and loves it. He say's it feels very similar to Starboard formula's.

I did the opposite to you, I went from having several different Starboard formula's over a 15 year period to finally settling for an Ultrasonic.

In real terms, there's hardly any difference in early planing in 10/12 knot winds. But the advantage defo goes to the Formula in sub 10 knot winds. Both fly up wind and the Ultrasonic is a little more comfortable down wind. Down wind, the Ultrasonic is a little bit quicker too, (presumably because it has a narrower tail).

Some one from Starboard, Thailand told me, although its called the US147, but its real volume is 136 litres. But to me, it still feels like a huge light wind weapon.

I don't think you will be disappointed with the JP168, it'll still scream past wind foil and wing foil boards in 10/12 knot winds. I love shouting "who's the daddy" when over take them!!!

just my 2 cents worth :)

Patrik air inside is another board im looking at but price wise is a lot more than I c an get a JP formula for. Ive just spent a day patching up some cracks in the US to try and keep it going a bit longer.

Yep air inside are very high end. Have you seen the videos of impact durability. Patrik bashing the absolute crap out of the rail with a mast extension then a fin. Then filled up with water then stands on it. CCRRAAZZYYY!!
