My comprehensive van insurance only covers loss or damage of contents of the van to the value of $500. This comes nowhere near the replacement value of the boards, sails, booms, masts, extensions, mast bases, fins, GPS units, harness, wetsuits etc. Does anyone insure their windsurfing equipment? If so, who with, what's covered and at what cost?

John my house is covered by WFI west farmers and they allow you to cover contents if specified such as my gear in van and anything else you detail with them.

Read somewhere in the forum GIO and ING cover as part of their home contents policies. However you need to double check as insurance providers like to change policy coverage if they get too many claims in a particular category ie the risk profile is too high. Ideally you need to check every time you renew the policy.

Also, if the items needs to be covered while locked in the vehicleyouwill most likely need tolist it with themunder the specified item category. For that they usually want item descriptions, serial numbers (if applicable), date of purchase, copy of receipts and name of the store purchased from and value.Depending on the total value of these items the policy can go up quite significantly compared to the base cost... and it helps to review it annually.

That's the reason why most people that buy business insurance which includes a lot of high value items use a broker. They will ask the right questions and you most likely will get a better policy premium.

Also watch out for the maximum amount covered in a home contents insurance. I have had an insurance claim once rejected because the total amount of lost items was more than the insured value limited in the policy. They argued I was underinsured.

House contents with Youii. Covered for accidental loss or damage when in the van at home or away.
I had to look around.

After BlackBetty the 5 seater got written off ??. I found out from GIO that the rack that I had designed a Permanent Structure would have been an issue with insurance ??, not being engineered and all the other stuff that goes along with engineering rule's and regulations OZ standards...
I know if I had the mesh behind the driver and passenger it would be covered.
The GIO assessor had asked a few questions regarding some nutserts being installed and some machined bolts tig weled brackets to suit my set up, His comment was it engineered... No comments were made from me.
SO as for the van Guy's & Gal's do some researching...
Design it, get it engineered and it will be OK. ????

As for gear cover, In June 2021GIO platinum covers in trailer or engineerd vans etc, in the garage or driveway or on travels around Oz. As mentioned above need to check in 2022 insurance.

Hbf Home Ins cover items up to $3k each or you then have to detail the items and pay extra if you what a higher value on the items. .

Need to look at the relative costs of 'collections'. Maybe?
I have a vinyl/CD collection that I needed to insure as a 'collection' ie listed as 1 item on my policy.
Fun part is/was that most policies, at least the last time I was shopping around, have stipulations that no one item can be more than X% of the total value insured.
I can't remember what my music collection is insured at, nor can I remember what the X% value is/was (speak to your insurance provider/broker), but my home contents are insured for something stupid like $120K, for a $20-30K music collection (reminds me, need to do a stocktake and re-value).
Long story short, if they want to deem all your gear as a 'collection', make sure the total value of your insured home contents covers it... ie that you're not going to be hit with being 'under insured'.
Or list all the items seperately, if possible.
Either way, don't listen to me. Talk to your insurance co or broker.

Just check if it is for replacement value, or actual cash value. 6 yr old board actual cash value is probably not much.

I had a homeowners insurance company for years that was cheaper than all the rest, and I was never told that the policy had a replacement Actual Cash Value for the home contents (and car contents too), of course it must have said it in the fine print somewhere, but the sales rep. never told me. A policy with a Replacement Value for home/car contents means it will replace a 10 yr old 65" TV with a new 65" TV, whatever the cost, up to the policy limits.

I've recently gone through the insurance question asked by PO.
All my gear is stored in my LDV van. I checked with my insurer and found van contents cover (under my home contents insurance with Shannons) was minimal. I contacted Shannons and found I could cover everything for replacement value (about $30k) by itemising the major equipment pieces, boards x2, sails x6, foil kits x2, masts x4, booms x2. Also had to supply photos of each piece of equipment with serial numbers if applicable. All up, IIRC, it added about $300pa to my Home and Contents policy premium. Can't get a $30k car insured for that.
As I have multiple Shannons policies (cars & motorcycles) premiums are discounted.
