While on the cutting topic.
I just acquired a battered 2005/2006 JP FSW 98 (nose cut off - so probably 96L).

I need a suitable fin, and was thinking of cutting down this fin (It's a JP Seaweed 33cm.) to suit ocean sailing and the high wind days on the river.

Any advice on where to cut (how long it should be), and how (straight, angled, curved...)

You will need to give us an idea of what type of sailing you are doing... ie: freestyle, bump'n'jump, ocean blasting, wave riding. And sail size.

You could just leave it as it is... combine it with a 6.5m freeride sail.

I'm only and advanced beginner. 97kg.

The goal is to be comfortable in the ocean chop. And to sail the river in strong winds.
No particular speed goals. So far managed only 25knts on the river and have no particular desire to ever go over 30 knts.

I was told the board's sweet spot is a 6m sail.

Why don't you just go get a smaller 2nd hand fin.

Last 2nd hand fin I got was only $50. That was from a shop as well.

A lot easier than chopping a fin. Plus you can keep this one for light wind days or for when you get a bigger board/sail combo

Windsurfing Perth have got a huge amount of s/hand fins in their shop including lots of suitable JP fins. Check em out in Seabreeze Buy & Sell under Windsurfing Accessories in WA, most of the fins pictured are theirs but they do have many many more!

Std fin for that board was a 29cm FSW, sure you could find one similar.

Thanks for your advices guys.
Just got hold of internet now so couldn't respond earlier.

This fin is unused, and I was thinking of utilising it somewhat instead of buying another fin, which may or may not work. It would be an interesting experience too. Easier than building a complete new fin, like some people on this forum do.

Neb, your help it would be great.
However, I'm away for 2 months (currently in Canada)

If you don't mind, I may remind you of yoursurgery offer in 2 months ?
