I have a Wayler YPSi LongBoard and was wondering if there was any particular sail I should be getting for it?
What sail mounts, bases etc are compatible?

Here are the stats: Length 3,75m
Width: 0,68m
Volume: 235L

Any help would be great!

I believe that is an old board, someone on here should know a bit more

But i'd suggest getting (if not cost prohibitive) a newer board, that way, no issues with trying to source old parts that are all mismatched.

Newer gear (say last 10yrs or so) will be interchangeable, that way you can buy any new/2nd hand recent parts and they should work

I say this as: I begun ~2yrs ago in same situation, old longboard, breaking, non-interchangeable old obsolete parts, then one bit breaks and the whole rig cannot be used.

Spend many hrs each sailing day annoyed at gear, then got gear about 5yrs old and it is easy, worth the cost and improving my sailing, and best of all more fun

No saying dont sail longboards, just make sure the bit are new

Yeah I was thinking that may be the case. It's in good condish but does look like it'd be an older board.
As far as getting a different set up, are there any sized board/sails I should be looking at?
I'm a fairly light guy, I hover around 70kg and I'm 5'11.
I used to surf a 6'3 but that was a while ago and windsurfing looks more fun :)
I live right opposite the beach on the bay so I wont be doing wave sailing anytime soon.

Any help would be great on recommended lengths, sizes etc.

I think that you may be in trouble with the board (probably 1980's vintage), because I THINK that it uses a female socket in the board, in which the original universal joint and mast was placed. If this is the case, getting parts to match would be very difficult.

Suggest that you go 'round to the Rye yacht club and have a look at the gear that is being used, paying particular attention to how the universal joint (UJ) is attached to modern boards, via a mast track, mast base, UJ, mast extension and mast. As Dism has pointed out, more modern gear is easier to set up and use.

There are still many "learners" going to Rye, so perhaps you could team up with a regular and soak up their knowledge. Also, sailing with others is a safer thing to do.

You might also do a one-day trip to Melbourne and visit SHQ and RPS to get an idea of what second-hand gear is available straight off the shelf.

You can visit the web sites of Fanatic, JP, Naish, RRD etc to see what modern boards are all about. You can learn on the older-style Fanatic Cats, Mistral One Designs etc and take advantage of the better mast connection systems than the Ypsi, but they are narrower and more "tippy" than the modern wide boards. A sail size of no more than 5.0 m, learning in winds of 5 - 10 knots might assist you.

I'm sure that others can offer advice, too.

Well, poor bugger, do a search on U-joint for those kind of boards. There was a discussion on that about 1-2 months ago.

Other than that, the Ypsi was a surprisingly good longboard in its days. It would plane fairly well, and lent itself to real good freestyle. Real easy to gybe. The bitch will be to find a proper rig for this - might not be worth it.

OK cool, I'll check it out. Yeah I've been told it'll be hard to find a rig for it but I'll hold onto the board in case something comes up. It was given to me anyways so I'm losing money on it.

If it has a skinny short aluminium mast, like my ancient windrush mothership, on it then getting a "normal" "old, one piece mast, even fibreglass with an alum mast extention underneath that will slide straight over the small original mast and you can use far more modern sails with your board.
The bottom downhaul keeps it all in place!
This is what I do with some of the "obsolete gear" I found.
Works a treat and loads of fun with bigger sails gliding around in light winds on the old slapper!
I even have used the old dancefloor as a longboard, leaving the centreboard at home.
Walking to the tip is not a good idea though if you do not want it to snap due to the flexing.
Just surf it in a old fassion aloa kinda way.
The look on some of the fellow surfers is priceless!

Ah Dufour wing..I learnt on one of those..I have fond memories of flying along with my front foot wedged aginst the mast to prevent catapults..

the "old" planks do make suprisingly reasonable longboards and with the sword down even a half decent and cheap, Longboard peddler, (not so good in bigger surf) but on calm waters the extra stability makes learning and having a decent workout, a pleasant and cheap alternative!
They used these boards to start wave surfing in the good old days!

Seems that these old boards have slipped into the unknown, so I made some pics just now to somehow rectify this a bit.
I picked this up for the price of a cheap carton of beer with pocket money for chips and a burger at the best burgerspot in WA.
Windrush board, same as the windsurfer one in most respects.



Look at the size of it and the tiny little aftermarket sail (from Hong kong)with the puny little mast!
Also spot the original board bag and the zips are still working!
But this bitta dance floor sails beautifull and gracefully!
The mast is small enough in diameter to slide a later mast extention over it and add an one piece old rottocup fibreglass 4.6mtr mast.
This gives it the choice of lots of sails all of a sudden and it is fun to cruize on!
Go and find one for the price of a carton/slab, let your girlfriends/wifes, Children have a go on it and reap the rewards of them becoming interested in it.
Try using it as a longboard or even as a SUP trainer and stop these relics becoming land fill!
If it has a hole or tear, use aquarium silastic, let it set/dry for 24 hrs and it is back in action

Yep, not all of us want to be the fastest or even blast around as Our wel pickeled old, and inevatably broken here and there, bodies can not take that sort of punnishment anymore.
I got to say that getting back into this sport after 20 odd years absence is a blast and all that for less than a carton!

In your first pic Ducatist, that rig is from a Tyronsea Moth although with a different mast base. I had a 2.5 that looked just like that as my first sail

I have not tried this old handkachive at all, It came with the set.
Including the tiny aluminium mast!
So far have sailed the slapper with a 5Mtr. Gaastra sail (also Old school) with and without the battens in the sail.
Goes much better with the battens in!
Next I'll try a 10mtr Gaastra race sail, I have had this in the loft for 15+ years!!
It might kill me or the dance platform, hehe!
