Right, some may remember my endless questions about how to gybe, tips and techniques. Basically I was hitting a wall and could work out how on earth so many folks gybe so well- or even get around the corner without falling off. But after 3799 failed attempts and some pretty comical crashes I'm can finally say I'm starting to piece them together! He is a short clip I took yesterday at Queens Lake (near Port Macquarie NSW) which shows the end results of many questions, some great advice from seasoned sailors on here and in our local club (go the Marauders!) and sheer persistence over the past 19 months

Do you have different sails for gybing and tacking ?

6.6m2 HSM for gybing and 6.6m2 black something else for tacking ?

Mr Carantoc, nah mate, been using the 6.6 black something (Loft Oxygen) mainly for ocean stuff but took it for a run at Forster last week.

whats with the double foot movement of the front foot - your putting your back foot in the right position next to the strap (for a strap to strap gybe) on the other side but because your rotating the sail so late you are having to move up the board in a second movement.
Looking at the landscape in the back ground the board view doesnt change from a second before you start sail rotation to when you are back in the straps planing - this means you are rotating at the end of the gybe.
For a good planing gybe you should be rotating sail way before this point - ie back in straps before you finish the turns.

If you start the rotation of sail when the board is about 90 degrees of the wind and slow the arc of the board down you can pick it up and sheet in by about 135 degree you will find you can just slide the foot directly into the strap and it will give you the leverage to power up the sail immediately after the rotation.

That looks really smooth. I'm impressed! (and envious). I'm a few thousand gybes ahead of you I think and am yet to come out planing.

That angle is really helpful, you can see the carving and rotation of the sail in one motion, not two.....hmmm.... mental note.

Hey Grumpysmurf, the pervious post was a fair while back, maybe 6 months. And no secrete, just plenty of time on the water (nearly 1800 recorded kays, and probably another 500 not in under 19 months.) Got miles to go yet, and one-day hope to pull off 23 plus knot alphas like the fast guys do. Priority though is to have fun!!

Hi GusTee, Yeah it's a 111 Futura. Great board, but pretty big for me ( I'm only 76 kilos) but has been great for learning on and is sweet in anything up to 20 knots. Over that and I get hammered

Thanks everyone for the nice comments The clip was only put up as I was stoked to finallllllllly start getting my gybes sorted. It's certainly no lesson, or guide to gybes, just an excited north coast surfer stoked all those many pieces that is windsurfing are starting to come together. For me planning gybes have been a total battle, and one of the hardest parts of windsurfing I've delt with, but some sweet tips from great sailors has made the progression much quicker- thanks again!. All amped now, blow wind blow!!...lol
