I was so pumped to be going to Green Island for a week. It is touted as one of, if not the best flat water windsurfing spots on the East Coast.
Having read through the resort website.."All house guests have complimentary access to the gear you'll need to propel yourself around the island via the power of the wind"

I did not see any need to bring gear.
Halfway through the week a nice breeze began to set in, so off I went to have some fun. Well it turns out that aside from a learner board with a 3.5msq rig, they do not have any gear, although this gear, according to Sid who runs the beach activities, "is the latest and greatest".
Even this was put away when the breeze arrived. Apparently there is no windsurfing when there is a wind warning in place as it's too dangerous.
There is a shed on the beach which is packed full of gear, but this according to Sid, is all privately owned.
So I have resigned myself to watching a couple of locals blasting across the water and wishing that I had some gear.
The wind forecast looks awesome for the next few days, and I'll be drowning my sorrows at the bar!
So as a warning to anyone else thinking of coming here, reading the windsurfing sales pitch blurb and believing it will be bitterly disappointed.... as I am right now.....

Rob did you talk to the other windsurfers, they're very nice guys who could have given you a heads up ?

It's a bugger it didn't work out for you, I'd be spewing if there and no gear, the bar wouldn't have enough rum. Toody used to have all the latest gear there for hire (separate from resort) but is now doing something else. He might have some stuff left so ask the guys sailing as they'll be mates of Toody and will know the go. Sorry I'm no longer in FNQ so can't help.

Cowboy, Rob never said Green Island had the flattest water. I myself do think it's one of the best spots if not the best and it's not how flat or not the water is, I've sailed plenty of flat spots that can't compare. The red thumbs not from me, just saying.

That's a real shame for you, it's a great place to sail and host an events as it has the last 3 years, 13 days of sailing out of 15 competition days in great wind, beautiful water and that's in the middle of winter.

Do the sums Cowboy and I'm pretty sure it represents the best bang for your buck with the highest certainty of sailing, that adds up for me and many others who have sailed there.

I had a similar problem when I was at Green Island some years ago. They had gear, but were not able to lend it out when the wind was over 20 knots. As it blew 30 knots day and night the whole week I was there, that meant no gear was available, so no sailing for me.
I lamented on this site when I got back and some of the FNQ GPSTC mob said they would have gladly lent me some of their gear.
So if you are still there and if you are competent enough to sail in a strong offshore wind, I would suggest
1. asking the local sailors when you see them if they wouldn't mind letting you have a go on their gear .
2. Get on the GPSTC site gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?date=2015-10-04&team=20 and ask the FNQ MOB if any of them can help you out. At least one of them was sailing Green Island today.

Yeah I know how ya feel .i rang Toody and he told me there was no gear to hire .so I never went ,but it looks like a awesome place to sail .
It s not only there ,but right through Australia's east coast .it's getting hard to hire gear .i pay the extra baggage and take my own .If I know it's going to blow .
nothing worse than sitting on a sandy beach on a hot day with a howling wind and no gear ..

I did a day trip during the last green island nationals. Tried my best to enjoy watching many other sailors having a blast while I was watching on the beach with no gear. I did a quick walk around to see if any supplier had any demo gear I could hire, but no luck. Someone did offer me a sail on there gear, but a heat was a bout to start and I did not want to risk damaging something before they were going out in 15 minutes (and they had a bout 1.5m2 more sail than I would normally use!!). Was still a great day, but it would be great if there was a solution for fly in travellers who are unable to bring gear.

Wow, looks amazing but reef looks shallow - no probs hitting your fin?

I snapped one off once saling over a challow reef when I lived in Saudi, had to sail back dargging my harness behind so I could get to shore
