Spent a couple of weeks up in Cairns, it was warm and very windy. Out at Green Island there were probably only 5 days or so out of 18 under 20 knots. About one week of that was solid 25-30+.

Green Island offers basically everything apart from hardcore wavesailing, there are conditions for speed, freestyle, cruising and bump and jump on high tide. The croc park and snorkelling is great when the wind is light.
Here is a video mostly shot on the island -

Some more photos here - http://wavesnwind.com/photos-cairns2012.html

And yes there are waves up that way - unfortunately my camera got destroyed so no action until next time...

Love the vid Al - Well done (& it's a real McLeod family affair). Good to see the old man skimming across some shallow water on the eastern run.

I don't know enough about the joint, but looks like it would be a great set-up for the PWA to run a slalom/freestyle comp?

Not sure if it that would ever happen - it is a national park and also the only accommodation is in the resort which isn't cheap... For smaller scale events though I definitely think it is doable.

Thanks, nah just have kind of figured it out myself.

Where the photo is from it is 50km offshore, so you need a big boat. Getting out there when it is windy is not fun at all. The area is also sketchy with heaps of shallow bombies that suck dry on low tide so you need to have a good understanding of the tides...

No fishing on the island because of the National park, but it is ok for Aborigines to hunt and kill turtles on the beach right in the middle of the main swimming area in front of tourists... Has been a pretty controversial topic lately.
That GT has will have a go at fingers and toes when they are dangled in the water!

How does one get to this location, with gear and all?

P.S. Wow, oh wow!

Looks like a few places in The Broadwater actually, but they aren't 5.5nm long. More like 200m. And they require the right tide, weekday etc. etc.

Michaelmas Cay is ~20nm from Cairns/Yorkey's knob .There are Tourist operators that take snorkellers & divers out to the CAY itself .
The Reef Runs to the East of the Cay so in a private boat you can motor on out (seas are usually horrible when the wind blows) & anchor up on a patch of sand adjacent to the Reef Margin ,rig up & take off .
Toody & I couldnt believe how good it looked when we arrived.!!
The wind was square to the run so it was easy to go both ways without having to pinch hard & although the water was not glassy ,it was very comfortable .
The tide was very low yesterday (.19)so I would imagine that this place will only work on <.4m of tide before getting too chopped up .
Once the tourists left the Cay we had some Runs in the shadow of the cay -there is a patch of water to the West which remains glassy but has full strength wind -unfortunately the run is only short but with better wind it could be a seriously quick spot .
I still have to pinch myself ...!!! It was so good ...
