I realise this has come up before in previous posts, but i have been unable to find them (possibly too old) or get a 'proper' answer!

Anyway, Im currently spending the winter out in Beautiful and bloody hot Dahab, Egypt, where i was fortunate enough to get a Go Pro HD for my birthday!

anyway, my question is, what sort of mount do i need to buy that allows me to attatch it too my mast and my boom?

To attatch it too my mast, i think ill just cut two small holes in my Luff so i can wrap the go pro around the mast?

Im tossing up between the Roll Bar mount, and the Seat Post mount!

I was told that the Seat Post mount is not as sturdy as the Roll bar mount? but im not too sure!

What are you suggestions!?

I used the roll-bar mount for my boom and I'll use it on the mast tip too.
I was also planning on making a small hole with a hot poker in the luff sleeve. Alternatively, people have had extensions of various types poking up to attach it to.

Brings back memories Egypt, was there only last week ;) Wind was blowing 24/7 20-30kts, still the same? I was at Zaafarana on the Red Sea, 200km south of Cairo. Have a great time in Egypt.

If you have an adjustable head strap, ie your mast sticks out the top, use a length of ally strap bent 90deg and drill a hole for the strap plug to fit through. When rigging up just fit your bracket between the mast and cap, that will jam the bracket tight then just stick one of the GoPro mounts where and how you want to the bracket, I'd drill a small hole for a leash also. I haven't done this but it's my next project

If you don't have an adjustable head strap or it uses a cap that fits over the mast then it's back to plan A

We've used a couple of home made mounts with mixed results.
We used a bit of PVC pipe with a slot cut out that fits over the top of your mast tip and is secured by a safety line either to the loop at the sail head (on some Pryde sails) or to the top batten. If you can get the mount to fit tightly it certainly gives a nice angle

The seat clamp or roll bar mounts are not too bad but the bigger the mount (ie the more coupling extensions you have) the more vibration it picks up.
Having got my hands on the new Flymount, I'd recommend you take a squiz at one. It gives you multiple possibilities to securely clamp to any position along the mast.

I used the seat post mount for boom end shooting to good effect but you have to use the least number of couplings possible.
I also home made a couple of mast head mounts that stick up above the mast head but they whip around too much with the mast tip, they got some great photos but most of the video was pretty bad, I think a clamp style like the flymount will be better

So you think that the roll bar mount will fit around the diameter of an RDM mast about 3/4 up?

If so that would be awesome!

The first half of this clip is a helmet cam, the second half is shot on the boom , on the back of the grip. You can see a big difference. Helmet is quite unstable. Boom is dead stable, btu you can see the horizon jumping around. Overall, I think the boom is easier to watch and gives a better perspective than helmet.
I think the best mast shots come from the tip. No wind since I got back, so I have not tried that yet.
Yes, roll-bar mount will fit anywhere on an RDM. It has an good system for attaching to various diameter tubes.

Nothing there that hasn't been posted elsewhere by now. I liked that board though. Didn't ride much else. 93L was great for lighter wind, 82L and 75L rocked in higher winds.
None of them ever did anything wrong.
Graphics look great in real life too. They have a neat medieval pattern that doesn't show on the bootleg pics put up elsewhere.

Second the hold it with one hand and do your moves with the other HTFU, gets the style points through the roof.

Just tie it on with some string.

just mount it to a sawn off north tail piece, and ram it down the top of the sail..

then sail over to kamikaze hooked it at low tide and post results..

Yeah, i do that regardless of a Go Pro, tacked on the reef the other day, stacked it... 11 holes in my board, and 6 in my back! LOVE TO!

Hi there,
I'm sorry to blatantly push our product in my first post, but the Flymount really is the perfect solution for mounting cameras on windsurf rigs.

We're windsurfers, and have spent the last 3 years developing the Flymount specifically for this purpose - it just happens to work brilliantly on virtually any action sports equipment too.

As far as we know, there are no other camera mounts on the market that are designed for use in salt water and high levels of UV, and unlike a roll bar mount, it can be attached to almost anything, including flat surfaces. And you don't have to cut holes in your mast sleeve!

It's also an incredibly tough little piece of kit - Mark Angulo is featured in this month's issue of Windsurfer International Magazine using one in mast and a half high reef waves, which he fell in on. Plus it weighs less than 200g, so you really can't feel it on your kit.

We use Flymounts to attach cameras everywhere, you'd be amazed how many places you can fix one, and you can even attach an SLR to it for static applications.

the flymount website says these fit a tube upto 40mm diameter - is that enough to fit say halfway up the mast on a RDM or does it need to be right at the top to fit on?

Also is there a way of locking the ball joint?

40mm is the max measurement at the front of the jaws (it's actually a little bigger than 40), the inside measurement is quite a bit larger. It will fit to any part of an RDM and down to below the boom on a standard diameter mast.

The ball joint locks in place by turning the three point handle that sits below the mounting point.

There is also a video sample with windsurf. Looks like the handle is a bit too short, but easy to set up some longer one.

Hey Joe the Flymount looks great for a shockproof/waterproof camera, which is exaclty what im about to purchase and I was wonder if their was a product out there for these camera's that do exactly this. Thx to Boards Windsurfing Mag it got me onto this product.

I tried to purchase the flymount, but my credit card wouldn't work online? Works everywhere else though? Spoke with Joe, who was great, but couldn't resolve, so I haven't bought one.
