Your advice please.

Fit 46yo 6"1' 125kg wants to get back into it. Live in SA.

In the 90's, I was a good flat water/ slalom guy, proficient at gybes/ waterstarts/ chop jumps. Best memories are powered up on a 6m 93 NP slalom sail and a JP yellow slalom board. Lake George, Goolwa and Black Point YP. Had a Tiga 268 and Bic Adagio/ Allegro before that as well. Weighed less then, more like 95kg.

I'll be sailing flat water/ chop, mostly at Black Point YP over Xmas break and other holidays. Sea breeze builds there from 15 up to 25 kn. fairly often. Also like to get into Boggy.

Obviously more gear, more time on water, but really only want to get 1 board and 1 sale at this stage.

SHQ has recommended JP-Australia Magic Ride ES 142L and Neilpryde X-Move sail 6.7m. What do people think of this recommendation? Should I get the 154L? With my weight, might be a good idea. Though I'm not going to bother with marginal conditions/ uphauling. A quick tack might be on the cards though!

Hi Badge, I came back just over a year ago, I was 47 years old and 122 kg. I am now 110.
I got a fanatic gecko 156 and a Severine ncx no cam 7.5 sail. Great combo.
It took a while to get used to the new gear but once you do it's brilliant. Shorter fatter boards and modern sails you can carry larger sizes than we used to in the old days.
I agree with SQH, the magic ride would be great for you but I suggest a slightly larger sail to start with.
Stick with it and you will be going much faster than you used to in no time.

Do you live in Adelaide ? if so, pop down to the Murray mouth on the next decent wind forecast. Have a talk to Peter who has a couple of large JP Slalom Boards and big sails 7.0 - 9.0m2. that he goes crazy fast on, or go down to Boggy and check what people are sailing. Plenty of knowledgeable friendly people that can give you advice. If you are on the YP, Hoppy and Tricky sail at Stansbury and might be along later to give you some tips. (They may even get you hooked on speed sailing at the spit ).

Thanks for your responses guys. Yes, I live in Adelaide. Looks like I should think about a larger sail than I was thinking. I will get down to the water and speak to some people next windy day! Very excited about getting into this again!

I find I use a much bigger sail now than I used in the 90s for the same conditions there Much lighter and easy to use and have greater wind range

Hey Badge, I'm 6' and 105kg and use a 154 ES Magic Ride. There's no substitute for cubes for the larger gentleman, don't go the 142 it's an almost identical outline with less litres. I notice that the new Magic Rides are a different sizing, the 149 would be a good size.
