Hi,

I used to windsurf over 15 years ago and recently got back into it a bit after a friend gave me a really old windsurfer. Because it is so much fun, I want to get back into it.

Are there any good windsurfing shops in Sydney? I'm in Cronulla and I can't really find anything except standup surf shops. Where do you all buy your gear from? All online?

Also I realize that things have changed dramatically in the last 20 years, so I need some advice ;-) I'm tall (1.90), heavy (102kg), overall quite sporty. My technique is a bit rusty, but improving fast ;-) I can do beach starts, get planing, am comfortable with the harness and can gybe (more the easy version than the advanced version...). I think a "typical" surf day would be around 20knots wind...

What would be a good setup for me? I've been looking torwards a 150-160l boards (e.g. JP Magic Ride) and a 6.5m2 sail... Would that make sense...

Cheers for all your help...

I am similar size to you, but a bit shorter at 182cm. If you had sailed in the past, you will probably pick it up again quickly. If you are after a 1 board solution at first, I'd recommend going for a board around 120-130 ltrs, and widths about 70-80cm, with 2 sails, about 6-6.3m and a 7/7.2m.
I use a 122ltr/72 cm wide board as my main daily user with a 7m freeride twin cam, and a 6.2m bump 'n' jump/freeride 5 baton sail. this combo covers me most days. when it gets windier I'll use a 105ltr board with the 6.2 or a 5.2. this 2 board/3 sail combo covers me for all.

Dave

I'm thinking of getting back into it as well. Had a windsurfer one design in 80s. Is there a place you can hire a complete setup to see if I'm up to it now days. I'm 51 but pretty fit, just not sure my arms would be up to it. Have harness technologies changed improved much.

I think Justin is the only one who hires equipment.

Harnesses are good.
About 10 years ago my back spasmed at home..I'd been sailing and suspected my old seat harness was to blame. It was a seat attached to the waist harness..
After my back settled down I decided to update my 90's harness with a modern one.
I couldn't believe how much more sail I could easily hold !
I'm used to using a harness.Just saying once you get used to using a modern one it will really help your arms !
I'm an old 62 kilo weakling and my arms wouldn't last long without one!

Any bigger board you get make sure it can take a foil. Also skip getting a larger rig and buy the foil, it's cheaper and will really increase your range.

Hi,

There is a local crew who can point you in the right direction depending if you want to sail off the beach at Cronulla wave sailing or sail
in Botany bay.

If you want to do Bay sailing you will need a freeride board: JP Super sports / Starboard Futura around 135Litres
Freeride sails no cam or twin cams sail around 6.6m to 7.5m
Fins G10: 46cm / 48cm
Go over to WSS boards and talk to Sam/Chris they sort you out.

Come down to St George sailing club when there is a south /south east wind there a crew of local sailors most of the time.

Just buy secondhand and dont pay too much and after you have used it for a year or two , you will get most of your money back if you want to upgrade.

Your thinking on sizes is good , possibly also a 8m.
Something tough like a Starbourd Go 140 -170, your going to bash it a lot .And they go surprisingly good .
