So yesterday I discovered the batten that runs through the boom on my severne overdrive had lost tension.

I haven't pulled it out yet but from what I can see/feel through the pocket, I'm reasonably sure the problem lies with the front section of the batten where the flat tapered section meets the tube. I think it either half way snapped or beig driven into the tube.

I don't spuppose anyone's had this issue before? Can the front section be replaced? Or is it a case of it needs a whole new batten?

I only ask because I know that the longer battens are hard to get a hold of.

The joiner between the tip and tube needs replacing id say they blow out and the tip goes into the tube replacements are easy to get from old race sails or from any of the shops or sail makers

Thanks stroppo, I'm gonna pull it out tonight and have a proper look. Hopefully that's what it is

Had that problem with my 8.5 overdrive, the plastic stopper on the rod had come loose, easy fix with epoxy.

I have had the second batten up (longest batten) break about 30cm from the mast 3 times on my overdrives. It is easy to replace the broken part of the batten with another piece of batten just using a normal batten joiner. Takes about 15 minutes to fix and is cheap.

Here is a video. Pretty much all battens are built the same.

Great video! I've had to repair a few battens but didn't realise you could just replace sections rather than use glass/ resin and a spare bit etc..
