Looking to get a board to allow extra sailing when less than 15kts around Port Stephens area. Also some 10 and 11m rigs. Considering Formula bds and purchasing as a second hand package complete.
Are they any good to use ? Or should i consider somethimg different.
I use a formula setup in Port Stephens and when the wind is light, its pretty good fun. If it's too light to plane, then I guess you can cruise around with a smaller rig if you just want to tool around.
The only problem I have with the Formula setup is that you get planing in the slightest gust, and it's only when you stop a long way away that you realise the wind is so light. Wait for the next gust and you're away again.
Of course, when there's no wind to speak of, you aren't going to be planing, but what is?
The only scary part of using the Formula rig in Port Stephens is when a pod of dolphins surfaces in front of you when you're planing. They move fast when they want to, but it still makes you worried about hitting them at speed.
You should be able to pick up second hand Formula kit pretty cheaply as a lot of people want to offload their kit each season and there's not that much of a second hand market.
