I'm curious how many of you have or currently use EZZY masts while mixing different Ezzy mast sizes to get the mast combination of your choice. Have any of you gone as far as going up or down 2 sizes? For example using an Ezzy 400 bottom with an Ezzy 460 top to get a 430 mast combination.

What about using a larger mast combination, such as an Ezzy 430 bottom and an Ezzy 490 top to get a 460 mast combination? Any idea if anyone has done these 2 mast combinations and how they perform on the water?

If i get one 430 and one 490, can I mix them to form a 460 mast, what is the difference to a genuine 460 mast? Would there be a problem to use it with a lion sail?

thank you for reaching out Andreas. We are happy you asked. You can mix a 490 tip and 430 bottom together no problem. The overall bend when compared to our straight 460 is a bit different. For every one size down on the bottom section you step down, the ¼ percentage goes up by 1 and the ¾ percentage goes down by one. What this means is a 490 tip/430 bottom mast will have a bit stiffer tip section and softer bottom section than a straight 460cm mast. Still, it is within our tolerance

I suppose it depends on your sail specs and where it sits in the constant curve spectrum - I use these ratios to make up 430 and 460 masts for my KA koncepts - I don't notice any differences other than they rig better and have better CAM rotation.

It will still be top quality ,constant curve mast but slightly stiffer ,doesn't sound to big a deal ..

my 430 hookipa 91% mast just got longer .we are talking RDM .right .

My wife and I both use Ezzy Lion sails usually the same size . On the 7.5 we use a combination of Ezzy 460 & 490to get the correct length . 460 top 490 bottom
& 490 bottom 460 top . When rigged there is no measurable difference in the sail set . When sailing there is no difference ??

It took me a little while to figure put why you would use a combination of a 460 and 490 mast for a 7.5 sail. Why wouldn't you just use the 460. Then the penny dropped - you have 2 off 7.5m2 sails and only one of each mast. That's clever.

That's curious. When I first bought Ezzy masts, I tried rigging up a 430, 460, and 490 combination or two, and the one thing that didn't give a good bend curve was a longer bottom section than the top. The curve was all wrong.

I used the same sail with the complete, mast and then used other combinations. Maybe I tried 430 with 490 to give 460 overall, so maybe that's why it didn't work so well. The 490 top with 430 bottom was okay though. So, maybe it made only a big enough difference when there are two sizes different.

Perhaps mixing parts from 490s and 440s may be stretching the boundaries.
I have also found the Lion 3s to be fairly forgiving with mast selection. May not be the sensitive type??

I understood that when mixing Ezzy masts the longer piece is always on top, and you can mix a gap of 2 sizes. So 430 base with a 490 top = 460 is OK (2 size gap) but you can't mix say a 490 top with a 370 bottom to make a 430 (i.e. 370 to 490 is a 3 size gap).

Personally, I currently use a 430 top with a 370 base = 400cm and this seems to work fine. Previously, I have used 430 base with 490 top to make a 460 and this seemed to also work.

Im sure buying the right length would be technically the best way, but I don't think you will notice any difference provided you follow the guidelines and you benefit which having to buy less masts for your sails.

i tried to mix a 490 top and 430 bottom in a 7.5 lion found the sail to have better low down but would not open up for speed also would not set to extreme setting. i found the sail worked better with it set up to fit the 490 i eventually brought a proper 460 for this sail

Anyone use the Ezzy mast combination of a 400 bottom with a 460 top to get a 430 mast? That is the combination I will be mainly using.

I've tried 370 base + 430 top to make a 400. Didn't work. Even on a stiff top naish sail the luff was massively flat overrotated when the leach had started to go floppy. Maybe 400/460 might be be better, but suspect the stiffness difference is too great

I use a 340 base with 400 top to sail 4 and 4.2m. 400 base and top works for 4.7 to 5.3 and then a 400 base and 430 top gets me to a 5.8 on the rare occasion I need it. Seems to work and saves a few dollars in having 4 sections instead of 2 1/2 or 3 masts, though if money was no object I'd buy a full 370, 400 and 430.
