I know this was covered multiple times but what is the latest on roof racks straps?

The normal straps from bunnings are too much hassle (first world problem ) - too long, always flap around, the buckle digging in to the board... Takes too long... I'm looking for something quick and easy (fast) to use. I keep boards in board bags. Sails and masts go inside the car so just 1 or two boards on the roof rack.

I like the Neil pryde wide straps (40mm) with the neoprene cover. you just quickly roll up the excess and use the velcro neoprene cover to hold the excess. They haven't let me down yet and never had a loose flappy strap with them. I think chinook used to do a similar style ages ago but haven't seen them in a long time.

+1 for Kanulocks.

I have had mine for probably 4 years, still going strong.
Easy to use, lockable and have 2 stainless cables inside, so wont be easily cut.

I also use them to secure my boards to the van at night if we are somewhere I am concerned with security.

Bit dear initially, but a good investment I think.

Not that I use them much, but Kanulocks are great.

I was kind of hoping something that works like Marty McFlys self-lacing shoes :-)
but thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check 'em out (or ditch my kite surfing GF and put my boards inside like I used to )

I can't believe there are actually other straps out there. I feel roof rack strap deprived.

I think you are overthinking what's essentially a simple problem with a simple solution. Just don't buy the cheapest straps you can find at Bunnings, Supercheap, Kmart, Target etc.

Just don't get caught looking at other straps by your current straps

I still have and use the set of straps I brought to Australia with me in 1989! Force Four brand, I think i got good value for money.

Buy which ever strap you prefer. If the metal buckle is an issue, simply slide a length of bike tyre tube over it. No more scratches. I use bunnings set, red n about 40mm wide. $28 i think. Nice n strong. 3 years use so far.

i use a big loop of shop cord chunky stuff maybe 8mm or so

on the net there are some knots suitable for shop cord.

loop it on itself on side of rack and throw over - if there is overhang on horizontal bar simply hook over. i like the elastic if there is movement of the board or padding underneath for some reason it stays reasonably tight

no flapping

or put a small line of 3 - 4 mm rope by bowline permanently on loop and use to ti off or tie up paddle or mast

great for short trips down to the beach and i just leave on racks when out and ready top go when finished in water.

no damage to car when throwing over - depending on craft perhaps not for freeways
