Hi all,

Planning a possible 6 month trip with the family from Adelaide Coast to Northern NSW. It would be from Oct - March. Mostly along the coast. We would be camping.

Checking to see whether it would be worth it to try and bring a small amount of gear with me.

I would be limited to 1 board, 1 mast, 1 boom and 2 sails plus other bits and pieces. Would be a hard sell for the wife ?? but may be able to convince her.

What are the summer winds like up the coast, if it's fickle and unreliable I probably won't bother. However if the summer is the windy season with ne winds etc I would be keen as.

Alternatively I would be happy to hire gear if anyone know of some spots along the coast where hire is possible.

What type of windsurfing. between south west rocks and qld border it's mainly wavesailing but there are some standout flat water spots.

that time of year is typically windy can be either SE or NE. Season starts around September and ends around April. One thing is for certain you'll be sailing alone at times. There is a what's app group worth registering with when you get north.

hire gear is not really a thing.

only thing I can guarantee is it's an amazing place to visit. Mid north to northern nsw is world class if you're into paradise.

I am an Aussie and grew up on the central coast and lived in Byron for about 8 years so know the coast well. I took up windsurfing when I moved over to Norfolk Island so never windsurferd in mainland AU

Would be flat water free ride type sailing. Never tried wavesailing. Would be keen to give it a go though in small swell.

Yamba and Southwest Rocks have fantastic flat water sailing.

I'm sure others will comment too..

Flat water spots .Lake George Sa ,Inverloch Vic, Sandy Point Vic, Mallacoota Vic, Sanctuary Point NSW, Primbee NSW. Take a 6.6 sail, 100lt Slalom board and a box of fins.

The board I was thinking is 104 ltr and a 6.5 freeride sail. Sounds perfect ??

I think that is a good all round quiver. If you can pack a sail in the order of 4.7 - 5.0 (if wife lets you) then that covers Adelaide and SE of SA. If you get into trouble, I can lend you something smaller. But generally, you can pick your wind range here depending on the time/tide. Give me a PM when you arrive.

Sadly I don't know anyone who would describe flatwater sailing at SWR as fantastic. Winter westerlies are flatish and fun when they come, but it's only bump and jump and waves in Spring/Summer NErs no different to most spots off the NSW coast. And no southerly spots.

Jimmie's beach, Hawks Nest nsw is world class flat water sailing in NE winds. Which is all summer. We used to sail about 100 sessions a year. last seasons it has been a bit fickle, 55 days sailing. They used to hold lots of events here, but then the access became a bit difficult due to council making parking restrictions. We currently drive on the beach and launch from the sand. we use big gear here, big boards to get out through the lulls on the shore, then it doesn't matter how big they are out in the wind as we are sailing right off the sand spit - like as little as 5 meters off the beach which NE wind is rushing off of - flat! Water.
Wind has been averaging 15kts here last seasons 8.5 freeride sail was the go to.
