The pessimist in me thinks that asking people to conform to certain areas didn't work before, as one certain sport doesn't give a sh!t but we will see...
As long as Council allows our access and moves the poorly located playground I reckon it would be a massive win

Last night the Cottesloe Council adopted the following recommendations from the council officers.


1. Determine not to proceed with the proposed amendment.
2. Undertake a comprehensive review of the Beaches and Beach Reserves Local Law to identify parts of the Law that are in more in keeping with the permitted activities in the Local Government Property Local Law and report back to Council on these various sections with a view to repealing them and inserting into the Local Government Property Local Law.
3. Undertake the Salvado Street carpark works and install a shower and drinking fountain to encourage kite surfers to use this area for set up, due to the additional space available.
4. As an interim measure, encourage kite and windsurfers to use the area’s specified on the attached map for their set up and access to the water.
5. Consolidate the playground equipment at the Southern Groyne into a smaller area and fence to separate windsurfers and children using the playground.
6. Undertake as a matter of priority the beach access path upgrades contained in the 2016/17 Budget. This point was amended to add wording along the lines of - give priority to Salvardo Rd beach access due to the its condition.
7. Monitor the impact of these works over the 2016/17 season to identify patterns of usage arising from these new facilities and implement restrictions as required in the Local Government Property Local Law if deemed necessary.
8. Thank each person who made a submission and advise them of the outcome.

WWA was able to present a statement to the council prior to the vote in which support was given to the recommendations and the engagement process undertaken by the council. The council was also commend on identifying the differences between windsurfing and kiting along with the different risk profiles. In addition to supporting the recommendations WWA requested continued engagement to refine the proposed map of launching locations. It was highlighted that over the 35yrs of windsurfing at Cottesloe there have been no public safety issues at either of the main launch spots i.e. dutchies and phone boxes.

Do you know what approach is taking the council to identify the differences and risk profiles between windsurfing and kitesurfing? A round table with both groups?

Both WWA and WAKSA have been in regular contact with the council officers and through this contact the differences were explained. This process is ongoing as we move forward.

Let's just hope they remember to have the prevailing leeward sides of the new footpaths lower, with the nuts and bolts that stick out sawn off. I said this in my submission.
