Question: where did he take off from and who in their right mind would set for a forward at that point:

Hmm.. you pose two distinct questions in that statement that must be answered separately.

Question 1: where did he take off from?

Answer 1:

He took off from Awesome land, drove down to Awesome beach, got on his Awesome board rigged with a 5.7 Awesome Sail. He then hit that Awesome wave which sent him flying into the now Awesome atmosphere....

Question 2: Who would set for a forward at that point?

Answer 2:

Someone who is Awesome!

Original question 'Does this require a pilots license?'

Answer: Yes - but you can issue the license to yourself when you are this awesome.

Like I said before - better to be the pilot than the passenger.

And that is why we don't kite.

^^and that is why he wouldnt have any chance of not having a crash landing.
A bit like doing jumps on a dirt bike into a creek, you can do some fancy moves, but can never land them.
Simple physics, big heavy boats will always fall out of the sky.

^^ huh? Are you referring to the photo? He is on windsurfboard not in a boat. Two very different water craft.

Not cool dude, did you even watch the vid!
Kiteing can't compare to this kind of skill and talent , dangling on a string is the wusses way out.
Push forward and clean doubles, holly crap! And how late is that forward, thanks for posting

To answer the second question - anyone riding a Tabou as they're awesome. BTW I have one for sale in the buy and sell section...

Simple physics: pretty, light things will always float away like a butterfly in the breeze.

Achtung Herr Stehsegler, you could have also added the link below which you posted in another thread. Amazing windsurfing.

PS: Maybe the very late stalled forward on a massive jump is the best way to land in extremely windy conditions - provided you time it right

Cheers

Varying around 50 knots. Koster (90kg) used 3.7m in the final and said he was overpowered. The Moreno twins (60kg) used 3.0m and were way overpowered but still landing big backloops.
