Wondering if this is considered really a D2. Crit 630. The front is fairly deep v but the back end tapers flatish.
It's been hanging around for ever. Had lots of fun on this back in the day.

I think the 630 measured in as a Division 1 board, which was for "flatboards" like the original Windsurfer and Mistral.

Sounds interesting! They don't actually fit into Raceboard rules, so how would it work?

I've been thinking about getting back into Raceboards, but the move to 9.5s and an extra rig meant that the cost kept mounting to the stage where it wasn't really worthwhile. Kicking the d2 around could be fun, though.

Your Crit 630 is a DI....The 650 was a DII however, just before the popular Crit D2.

D2s don't fit with RCB class rules...We have our own Class Rules and would be racing as a separate Class for a separate Title.

Thought I'd follow up here with success (Well it all looks good to me anyhow...)

Speedsailing this is definitely NOT! By the time I got out on the water this afternoon it was blowing 6 knots gusting 9 and then eased to 5 gusting 8. This from the weather station just 1nm downwind from where I was sailing.

I did exactly as decrepit kindly suggested and put my phone running Ultra GPS Logger in a Paqua case on my arm. It may have helped that it didn't even get splashed let alone wet. I changed the 'trigger' setting to 'max data rate' put the phone in airplane mode and headed out.

I've got no more holes in the data. The three analysis programs all agree within a fraction of a knot in each speed category. I take it that there being no readings significantly above those nearby and that the consistency of output is very good that I can take these results as being close enough to reality to satisfy any non competitive needs. Anyone care to agree or otherwise?

As a complete aside and not expecting anyone to share my enthusiasm, I'm quietly chuffed that I'm getting 10 and 20 second runs around 10 knots in this little breeze, however it's actually the taking angles and the VMG that interest me most.

Sending this out to anyone or no-one, I find it interesting and would find other people's longboard (especially D2) gps results interesting so perhaps it's worth throwing up here. This is this evening's sail on the DB2 Division 2 board with the old IMCO 7.4. The wind (reading from the very nearby weather station output in the centre below) was 20 knots gusting 30 between 5 and 6 when I sailed. I was a bit overpowered heading upwind in the bigger puffs that's for sure, but nothing that wasn't manageable.

Anyone else care to share something similar from their longboard? Is anyone at all getting a D2 board out with any regularity? These results are simply from the gps on my phone, my financial input to this is $7 or something like that for the 'Ultra gps logger' app and $30 or so for the waterproof pouch.

Ok, I promise to get mine out over the next fortnight....well, actually that's a loose promise, but I will try and make sure you're not the only one.

It seems that this thread is turning into the ongoing Division 2 thread and that's a good thing I think. With that in mind I'm playing messenger here with the following from Eric (Toubab on this forum).... I can't seem to get even a random group of longboards together at the edge of a city of 3 million people and it seems like I'm the only person currently regularly sailing a D2 board in Australia. There was also little expressed interest in Chris' suggestion that we get the D2's out for a single day at Dobroyd, so I'm thinking it's a long shot. Regardless, the effort that these guys are putting into reviving the D2's is indeed impressive. I don't believe that any board or boat type is any 'better' than any other but I like diversity in any pursuit and I think it is important to the greater appeal and longevity of windsurfing as a whole.

Saltyheaven, there are bunch of guys/girls who regularly sail longboards at Dobroyd Aquatic Club. You would have a great time sailing together with them, and a few probably would love a run on a D2 for old times sake. They may not all be on seabreeze. Also a decent sized crew who sail Wallys on Narrabeen Lake, which is closer to home for you. Pittwater is a long way from the rest of Sydney, so maybe that's why you've had trouble getting interest?

I don't they'd be all that quick at the top end; slower than a Wally, which peaked at 25.4 the only time I put a GPS on.

As far as all-round speed, the yardstick of 97 (IIRC) seems to be rating them too slowly. As a guide, they were pretty much equal to the world's best pre-foil carbon skinny Moths up till about 7+ knots of wind, and then they were quicker. It was similar against International Canoes, so they were clearly the fastest singlehanded mono for many years. On a typical day on a typical sailing club course a D2 with an 8.5 could still perhaps best the fastest non-foiling mono.

Part of the reason Wardii developed the first monofoil Moth was that he was amazed (or frustrated) at the performance advantage the longboards had over the Moths.

Hmmmmmm......... I've been thinking about the RB worlds but didn't want to mess around with three rigs etc. However, I have a good Lechner (ex Lars at Barcelona, apparently) and a very good (I think) D2 7.3. This could be dangerous.

Eric, I'm a possible starter at the worlds and there's an outside chance I could do Brest as well.

I would also be at the Raceboard states at Sanctuary Pt with a D2 if they'd start us, but I think too many of the D2 owners will be on their Raceboards.

Yeah, thanks James, I am aware of these two options. One of my defining choices in life is to live without a car. I don't expect anyone to understand or agree with my reasons for this, however for me it is not negotiable. I guess windsurfing is just a mere shadow of it's former self as far as popularity goes, it's taking me a while to see that reality. I have the old '83 Mistral Competition that I was going to sell although an option (if it's possible) would be to store it at either of these venues so that I can be involved.

All very interesting, I like these so clearly well informed offerings that you have Chris. It's not really top speed numbers that interest me, I'm more keen to know how I'd go alongside other D2 boards.

Yes there is a kind of "competition" between RCB and D2 at major Events, of which next World in Brisbane, as sailor population sailing these 2 different types of boards are about the same. So Rcb fleet will be bigger no doubt.

But I believe finding 5-10 guys (more?) willing to race round bottom boards again, making the News during this Championship week is a reasonable and achievable goal.

What a contribution to the D2 revival it would be!

So let's start regrouping and training! Still a year to go!

Just as reminder, accepted rigs for the Class are typical type A (6.5) and B (7.5) sails and Type C sails (up to 9.5)
All Class rules are available for consult on IWA website.

Now, for those of you willing to participate to Brest (D2) late August 2016 (Chris, you are welcome!) , here we go.

There is a lot of D2 equipements in France so D2 community will make some readily available to foreign sailors ;).

You missed the D2 by short...

If Crit 630 is a DI (a good DI, like Dufour Bic Wing), the Crit 650 is a D2.

Pittwater, Sunday 13th Dec, 20 knots (ish.. up and down). Fun

Hi all am a fellow pittwater / Palm beach sailor and am amazed I have never seen you guys. Been sailing this area for the past 25 years usually starting at Sandy point for ease of launching or palmy when the tide is in. Currently sailing a Phantom 295 ( 70 kg rider) but have a nice Lechner in storage mode. Used to sail with the Stormriders on a wally before moving up to Mistral one designs and shorter boards. All up, have been sailing for 37 years.
It would be nice to catch up with you on the water sometime.

Hi Joe, no they don't and mine doesn't usually either. One half of my gasket ripped off half way through this sail. All fixed back to new the next day though! And yes I made the centreboard.

SO....

Through intensely good fortune and karma I've become the owner of a Lechner a390.

It is the board I've been dreaming of, I figured I was going to have to make one to the lines one day. I was wanting a D2 board that was just a bit more optimised for higher winds and chop than the DB2 that I've been riding, The Lechner certainly is an improvement in this regard. It's not night and day and the DB2 is still a damn fine board, it does some things better than the Lechner and is a sweet sweet ride.

Alas I have room in my life for just one board. The DB2 needs a new home.

Yes Salty, I too am like you. The entire "out there and back" just trying to go as fast as you can go becomes somewhat tedious. The tactical nature of these boards and the challenge of sailing these boards well, in anything from mill pond still to very strong, challenging conditions present their own rewards that most common folk struggle to understand. I have an aged Doubleman 2 that is still basically seaworthy. I will see about digging it out and putting it up in the "for sale" buy and sell section. Only problem is it is on the Gold Coast, QLD.

And the really great thing about these is the time on the water they provide. Great bang for the bucks.
