Hi, I just noticed some new posts. What is the Cobra lechner? I've not heard of this board, or is it the same as what is usualy called Lechner 380?. I would also consider the Mistral M1, if anything to add to my Mistral collection. Nigel

A Lechner clone made by Cobra.
I saw a few of these under a tree in Bali years ago. I am not sure if they were licenced by Lechner or if they were hollow like the original. I am guessing they weren't class legal and may have been produced for training and racing in Asia.
I think there were Lechners made in Japan by Bridgestone that were licenced.
ps ; I guess you meant Lechner 390?; the Lechner 380 is a Raceboard, the 390 is Div 2.

Cobra...

I did a canal boat tour, self drive. They were all in back yards & jetties on the canal as we putted past. In one day i saw so many boards of all styles that i gave up counting them after 80 in less than 60min !!!

I can give you the route if you have your own boat and a few hours to cruise.

Haven't seen a Lechner 380 raceboard before but just found this video of one matched with a Demon VG7 - nice combo.

so, if the Cobra lechner is not a original- a copy, would that mean it would not be legal to race?

yes , sorry i meant 390, but having seen that Lechner 380 race board, i would love to get one of those too!!

hi Nigel, I reckon that there has not been a Lechner Class race in Australia since the 1992 Olympic trials.
That Cobra would likely measure within the Div 2 rules (as does the Lechner A390) but it would be even longer since Div 2 class events were raced here.
Div 2's don't fit in Raceboard Class but I am sure you could use it at informal club racing. John Doolan and I sailed ours recently at an event in Sydney that was open to dinghies, skiffs, moths, cats, raceboard, formula etc.

Here's something to totally screw with you.
I have a book from 1985 that was written by Jeremy Evans, absolute classic! Please pm me if you want it,

I'm thinking that the Div 2 guys may like it

The Cobra " Lechner Olympic Design" above is absolutely D2 Class legal and nothing else.
It is a D2, a clone of Lechner A390 shape...It is fully foamed (polystyrene).

It was built by Cobra Thailand to provide A390 Olympic hulls at cheaper price, the real Lechner A390 being too expansive for National Teams to buy to train for the Olympics (for most of). There has been other clones built, in Turkey, in Argentina (Drakkar), exactly same shapes.

I got 3 from for former Canadian team...Beautiful boards...An inconvenient however: Since they were foamed, they were becoming heavier and heavier while sucking water through gel coat cracks...Problem easily solve by adding through hull hatches to empty and dry them between sailing sessions.

Well, this is certainly a good start! Lechner A390.

To those that have experience of the A390 and other D2 boards, how does the A390 compare?

Does anyone in Sydney have one that they would feel ok about me having a spin around the bay on?

Hey Buddy how can I download these plans and what program is available?

Hi Belly, How goes? The file for those lines came from the D2 Facebook page. Um, I'm not on FB anymore and don't remember exactly what it's called.... (Can10 can you remind us please?) It's in the Documents section. Am I even remembering this correctly?
The program to open it is free online called 'Freeship'. If you can't find the plans file, I have it on my hard drive but unfortunately won't be anywhere near my hard drive until next January.

As far as I'm concerned from my limited experience, the Lechner is definitely worth chasing down for our East Coast conditions. One in good condition is easily worth as much as I've ever seen asked for one - well, worth that much to me in any case if mine went missing.

As we are plunging towards winter in North Hemisphere, you guys are heading to summer time....

What's your plan for D2 in 2018 ? Any D2 regroup/regatta planned?

Hello Sydney...do you copy?

Hey Guys,

So... any plan to organize a regatta or D2 regroup in the Sydney nearby area this summer?

Seems to me that you have enough sailors now to do so and have a cool 1-2 days weekend together...

Go D2 ! Don't be shy

I'm pretty sure shyness isn't the issue.

I've been surfing my way around the marble for the last few months but will be back before the years end and am looking forward to slicing that round bottomed wonder board upwind on its rail. It doesn't bother me too much if anyone cares to join me or not anymore.
Your relentless enthusiasm and motivation are admirable though!!

Zzz zz Zzz While Russians, Americans, Dutch, Polish,etc.. are waking up despite freezing temp, regrouping troops for next summer D2 regattas ...What do you guys are up to ? Don't you want having another try & add D2 to Oceanic in Brisbane Jan 2018?
We can try again still...3 sailors min to make a D2 Class with Podium. Don't tell me it is not possible.
But nothing can happen without you...

Hi all
I have really enjoyed this thread over the last couple of years. I got the chance to buy a Div 2 board from a second hand dealer nearby so got it and tried it and now I am ready to GIVE it away to anyone who wants to come and pick it up from Mount Martha Victoria. The board is ready to go with a chinook mast base. (2 x 8mm nuts mounted in original mast position). I also made an adaptor to fit a PB fin in the centre board as not impressed by original. This board is a bit heavy around 22kg (maybe) but works well once on the water. It is a bit of a challenge if you are a below average sailor like me (running square yikes) across, upwind and tacking in 5 to 15 knots its a dream and makes light wind sailing a challenge and great fun. This is pickup only and no text. Call 0468311011.

Pretty solid run on the Lechner this morning! The weather station for this readout is in the trees right alongside where I was sailing, I reckon the trees must have been knocking a few knots off the readings as the solid pulses were blowing the tops clean off the chop.

Have to say, the Lechner handled it so well. Going upwind I went through the occasional chop rather than over, no big deal though. Downwind was just silky smooth, pure joy. Gybing (as always on D2) was challenging, with both feet clear behind the straps mid gybe, still trucking straight downwind. They didn't all end well. : )
