its a great race... I was there in 2005 when Bjoern and Antoine (+ all the french guys) were racing in it. That year we had 35-45kts (with gusts measured to 55kts on the first marker boat in one race). I got smashed on my 5.6m and super loose speed board. Was hard to get in top 10. The water has really hard chop due to the wake of all those sailors and the shifting winds. A lot of the race can be upwind depending on those wind shifts. Its a very gusty place to sail. I remember sinking and swimming in at the start of one race because the wind dropped out in the bay a few minutes before the start, but on the course it was still gusting to 25+. There was a wind line about 100m from the start line that the guys on floaty boards could bob up to. The rest of us were swimming for 10 minutes. About 15 minutes after the start the wind filled in again.

The starts are awesome. You never know exactly when the rabbit boat is going to take off so you get quite a bit of stalling on the line. I got a couple of cracker starts in the races I did by holding back a little bit and charging the pin end as soon as I saw the boat start moving... thats what most of the top guys seemed to be doing. Its pretty risky because you have to assume that you will find a way through the front stalling pack. And dont get in front of the boat or they will run you over.

This year they are missing most of the pros due to a timing clash with ulsan PWA slalom. Shame they couldnt coordinate...

Just back from 2 days at the Defi Wind in Gruissan south of France. Awesome spot and insane wind:

The spot (already 30 knots on this pic!):

The winner, Pierre Mortefon, very consistent in these extreme conditions, up to 50 knots at the jybe mark on the Saturday:

Pascal Toselli flying on the 2 windiest races on his AB+ 54, more than 800m lead on the last race :

Jules Denel finishing 14th on his new Exocet RS2 (235*55*85L) and 5.2 XO Gold:

While the "Defieurs" were battling it out on the race course, others where testing new products in the lighter 30+ knots

The new Exocet RS range (from left to right, RS1 55 wide 84L, RS2 59 wide, 91L, RS4 69 wide 110L, RS5 73 wide 115L):

And the new Warp SL range (Warp SL 56, 61 and 66):

Results of the first 50 can be found here:
http://www.windsurfjournal.com/virtual/2/Documents/pdf/TOP50DEFIWIND2010.pdf

Big congrats to all "Defieurs" and thanks to Exocet (Patrice Belboech), Mistral-AB+ (Anders Bringdal) and Deboichet (Oriana Fiorentini) for their time and availability to test some gear.

Cheers,
Remi

No I didn't race, I just turned up for the last 2 days to test the new Exocet slalom range RS boards and did not venture around the first mark as it was gusting up to 60 knots on Sunday morning.

They canned the morning race and only sent the first 50 to a shorter course early afternoon...

They indeed fit like a very comfortable shoe on the water and slightly faster than a sand shoe .

RS5 and RS6 are available now.
