Hi all,

I was windfoiling and came into the beach to adjust my gear. When coming back out I let the nose of the board drag down the sand, which was I thought just clean sand (lesson learnt). I must have hit a sharp shell or something because I've got two pretty nasty scratches about 3cm long on the nose of the board. You can see at least with the front scratch where whatever it was seems to have actually cut into the board, more than just scratching the paint.

Is this something that will compromise the integrity of the board, and if so should I repair it with some epoxy or something (suggestions welcome)?

You maybe lucky that looks a bit like bog. is there any sign of fibers in that white stuff?
Fibers are what gives the board strength, bog is just to fill in low spots.

Following - will write comment here rather than a new post. Just came here to search for ideas to fix deep chips on Fanatic Stylemaster SUP that hit the reef after my leg rope broke today. Fanatic says outer layer is "Light finish and weight saving graphics" - I want to know what the finish is/how to repair, as previously I have always fixed boards with fibreglass/resin. Next layer is "Ultra light fibre layer" followed by "Glass reinforcement rail band". The chips feel deeper than the paddle chips on the rail (the bit not covered by tape).

Those are likely not scratches, instead it looks like cracks after a crushing damage from the mast hitting the board. A very common , and typical, damage from being thrown (catapulted) over the front. The foam inside the board gets crushed and the top coat cracks. Depending on the depth, there is risk of the board taking on water, so it should be properly repaired. After the repair it might also be good idea to install a nose protector, to avoid the same type of damages in the future.

Did you do a suck test? Wrap your lips round the mark and suck, if there is air coming out. waters getting in, and needs a patch up. If no air comes out it's a cosmetic war-wound you could leave alone or get painted.

I would leave the board in the sun for a while, see if any water or bubbles come out the cracks . Push on the crack see if it moves, if not,it could be just a scratch. You could fill with body filler or glasing putty, sand and paint. If the board is cracked leaking water, you will have to dry the board out and glass and paint. Good thing to learn proper repairs before the board gets heavy.

Yes, I'll go along with that, makes more sense than scratches from an unseen sharp object.
Did your mast hit the nose, have you catapulted?

I've got a duotone ION mast protector which I was using. My first thought was that it was damage from a catapult (of which I've had more than one) but it doesn't feel spongy or soft in the area, and also doesn't look dented, which is why I thought it must be a scratch/cut. Any good recommendations for a nose protector?

Yes, many many times lol. But I do have the mast protector noted above on the board. Not that makes impact damage impossible, of course.

as far as dents go lot depends on the construction. If it's carbon, it will be very stiff, and carbon just springs back into place, so you don't see a dent, and it might not feel all that soft, but if it is catapult damage, it will be softer than the surrounding area.

Big hit = bend = crack.
Even with a protector

I say grind back and glass it proper.
No bunnings resin though!

Sounds like you know how to repair a board then.... but believed the Fanatic marketing folk's crap and got to overthinking it
All that is saying, is a light glass job and bugger-all paint.
Treat the repair like any painted epoxy board.

I've matched Fanatic perfectly before so if you want pretty, come get a quote

I like using those mast / nose protectors. Not sure about glue on nose protectors, like they say, can have unseen cracks hiding under that, one of my boards did under 4mm eva that i stuck on, maybe the proper thicker ones are better

The one day that i did NOT have the ION mast pad on, i hit the bottom and the mast hit the nose so hard that it cracked top and bottom.

Not sure if Mark will mind me sharing this and putting Mark out of business , but i watched this, went to work, customized battle scar war paint and now the board is very happy again.

So I tried the suck test and couldn't get anything out of it. Pretty sure it's watertight.

I also got the mast out and checked to see the angle the mast came down. It doesn't quite line up. I suppose it could have caused crush damage that caused the cracks lower down but the top of the board is absolutely rock solid.


So I just chucked some ding repair tape on it and went out again on Friday, when I cut a small chunk of my shin out on the foil. That'll teach me. Probably should start wearing a wetsuit. Anyway I reckon the board is good but thanks for all the advice!
