Hey, I do a heap of stand up paddling and am very experienced but am looking at adding a sail to my JP for something different on windy waveless days... I know my JP has a screw that can take a sail mast but have no idea what I need!!!.... Not looking at spending a fortune for starters, just something to try out, can anyone advise me please?? Thanks

Any windsurfing base plate will screw right in, best to go to a local wsurf shop, they'll have all you need, and recommend a suitable rig.

You will need a mast base, mast, boom and a sail. Go for wave sail between 4.5m ish to 5.0

You won't be able to sail in strong winds at first; you need to work up to it.

Normally a wave sail would be very heavy (lots of battens and reinforcement that you don't need in lighter winds) and too flat for efficient SUPping. You need to maximise power to drive a longboard, rather than minimising drag. A longboard rig isn't flattened out until the winds go nuclear, and the OP isn't experienced enough to sail in that sort of stuff.

Standard single bolt windsurfing universal joint bases all fit (M8 thread)

But - the insert screw spun out of my JP easily. First time I screwed a windsurf base in, the insert in the SUP was fkd before I even screwed the base all the way in.

Make sure you run an M8 tap down it first, wash, repeat as many times as you can, blow it out with compressed air, wash again, use antiseize on the bolt in the UJ. Everything.

Trust me.............

Yep very good advice from Mark with tap and cleaning the threads, etc. Screw it in slowly and if you feel any resistance as you screw in the base, back it out, and clean the threads again.

I'm assuming you SUP in waves, and have a wave - cross over wave SUP.?? If so a small wave sail is def the way to go, they are not that heavy. In fact my waves sails are a lot lighter than my free ride sails. If it is a wave orientated SUP then a sail will not actually get you up planning and going fast, but will just be for getting you moving around and maneuvering .... Wave SUP will handle like a pregnant sow in stronger winds.....thus you only need a small sail....

if you have a different type of SUP and want to do a bit more cruising around then someone else will have some good advice

Get someone who sails to show you the basics first! Save heaps of time if you've literally never sailed before. If you don't have someone, then, first time, take the fin out and try handling the sail a for a bit with the board on the beach, placed 90deg to the wind before you go on the water.

Everyone has a different view, but personally I'd go a bit bigger sail than 4.5-5m, maybe up to 5.5. Get a second-hand something, heaps of stuff in the buy and sell here and most decent windsurf shops handle 2nd hand gear to get you going. My prediction is that one you get the hang of it a bit, you'll throw your paddle away…

Thanks for the advice guys, the JP I have is an 8'2x 32 wide body surf so it's a surfing sup not really for cruising, it's my choppy day lazy board.... Not much of a windsurfing crew up here that I know of and definitely no shops but heading down to the Sunshine Coast in a few weeks so will have a look around then....thanks again for your time
