Been out of the sport a while (7 years) and ex UK, having settled in Adelaide and picked up some 2nd hand gear I want to get back into sailing in a big way. In or out of Oz, where is the southern hemisphere's Greece equivalent, i.e., consistent winds, good kit/instructors to really crack carve gybes and progress? Cheers

Welcome Alex. It's hard to beat New Caledonia. Oct-Feb has consistent trade winds from 20-30 knots, it's warm, perfect for flat water blasting freeride or slalom and modern rental gear. Laurent, who owns the rental shop, is an ex PWA pro and provides top tuition. On top of that, New Cal is only a 3 hour flight (from Sydney).

I'm an absolute travel slut. So let me give my opinion.

New cal rocks. Consistent flat water. Warm. But expensive. Rental dudes can give you tips but that's not a clinic.

Mauritius is the most consistent wind. Great fanatic boards and north rigs. All new. Cheap as chips. But tuition is below par.

Guy cribb gives great clinics. Covers everything. Well worth attending his clinic on flat water. Eg invaloch in Vic. WA. Or he does a lake south of Sydney. Only problem his not back until Jan 2017. (I'm going to his gnarloo clinic in October.)

Shawna cropa and Matt Pritchard run an awesome clinic in Maui. They arrange all gear. It's all current season. I've done it three times. This should be your first.

Boracay ended up being a dud for wind when I was there.

it gets windy early in the morning and then gets lighter throughout the day. Also the tide was low from about 8am to 12 noon, so too shallow to clear a fin. I could have sailed early but I was too lazy to get up :)

its a very popular kiting spot, there were probably 150+ kites at any one time. The light wind or shallow water wasn't a problem for kites.

Yes. Maui is awesome and consistent wind. But Mauritius is redicilius. My mate has gone for a week each year for seven years. Had 48 out of 49 days over 18 knots

Stats say 300 windy days each year

I hear that the windsurfers and kites are all mashed together in Mauritius which is not great for some windsurfers where as in Maui there is still a bit of separation between the two activities.

Probably WA. Depends what you want and how far you want to travel. Fiji?

I can honestly say that there can be no better place for you to move on up to the next sailing level, than Cocos.

2ndwind's been running holidays over there for the last 13years,July >Sept.



A coral atoll, with over 5 kms of waist deep, 26 degree turquoise lagoon.

Trade winds blowing 15-20knts, often more.

Current RRD equipment, as needed/wanted tuition, supping with turtles, hanging in a hammock with g+t's.....

What more could want??

I used to take groups to Mauritius, but, over 3 years, found the wind to be a bit fickle, especially when you got out of the venturi

effect from Le Mourne. Loved the place, even got married on the beach there, but Cocos is the ideal place to improve techniques, due

to constancy and warmth.

Pretty damn chilling place as well!!
