How long does it take to drive to Perth from Brisbane? Anyone done it? Considering taking the road trip in January, doing a couple of weeks of sailing and then driving back to Brisbane (unless I meet a nice windsurfer lady and get offered a job). Will I need four weeks or five for the entire expedition?

Done it twice in 2 years, last time was 2 weeks ago. Took 4 days of driving each time from Sunrise till sunset (5-6 AM till 6PM). Roughly 1100 KM per day, without lengthy stops during the day. Gotta love the 2 to 3 hours of bonus due to time change!

Fuel economy depends on so many factors. This year I had a large roof rack and head winds most of the way so the cost was unbelievably high even if driving at 90Km/h, $1100-1200 to be more precise (that's around 750-800 Liters!) But I've done the same drive last year without the roof rack for about $900 but the petrol was also cheaper then. In 2011 I did Newcastle to Perth for $700. All these with the same car, 4x4 V6 Petrol. If you don't have a roof rack and a diesel engine, you can probably do much better than me. Jerry cans are very handy, if you have a few you can avoid fueling between Penong and Norseman, where it's mostly around $2.00 per Litre, or more!

I drove from the Gold Coast to WA about 15 years ago. This was in a Lada Niva that could only do about 100 km/h downhill with a tailwind. It took me about four days as well to get to Perth. This was constant driving, driving till sunset, making camp somewhere and then getting up before dawn to continue driving for 12 hours or so. Back then petrol was about $1.30 a litre in the road houses. Petrol in Queensland was about 65 cents a litre. I'd hate to think how much petrol costs out on the Nullabore now.

Back in my day we could do it in a V8 Kingswood in 2 days and it cost $36.

Seriously though - take every single thing u may need as everything is expensive. Last time I was near the border, almost 10yrs ago, it was $20 for a six pack of midstrength and $10 for a barbie pack
If you tried to take tapwater they'd almost kill you.

Looking at the distances, and taking into account I will be solo, I think I'll take seven days.

Careful people. It may not be a good idea to give advice on travel to this bloke. Remember the last time Ragnar went on an adventure to the west. There was lots of raping and pillaging.
