I replaced the boom grip on an old carbon boom. It looked really good after I finished but once I started using it it started peeling off in places. It was the first time I did it so obviously did not do it right. Any suggestions as to some tape I could use to hold down the areas that are coming off? I tried regluing but it did not work.

You can buy Anti slip heat shrink wraps off ebay, normally used for re-gripping fishing rods. Just use a hairdryer to shrink it. Remove the old grip and apply from the mast clamp end. Take your time. It looks like it will be all wrinkled but if you persist you will get a great finish. The only problem I have found is that the tubing comes pre cut and it is shorter than is ideal. I left a little bit of the old grip at the clew end of the boom that was on better condition, so that I had grip the whole way along the boom. Job done for $15.

I've got a feeling 15mm dia is too small, I've just ordered some 35mm stuff, but won't be here for a month or so. I'll try to remember to give feedback when it gets here.

Yes the 35 or 45mm tubing is what you need.

In future I will ask the supplier for 130-150cm sections, instead of the standard 100cm.

I had never seen those LISA booms, but now that I have I want one.

NS320 any pics? What did you use as glue? What grip did you use? Did you lightly sand n then wipe down the boom with metho to clean before applying the new grip? I'm curious as I've done my share of regrips over the years.

The 45mm Tube was large enough, in my case, to slide over the tail piece locks. Obviously the tail piece itself has to come out. It seems to shrink at least 50%.

Reglue with contact cement. Put it on both surfaces.
Let it dry before sticking down. (10 to 15 minutes)

Sound like the best way to re grip booms and it looks good too. I have just upgraded to new booms so the grip is still in good condition but I might get some and put it in the harness lines area to preserve the boom grip there

Gashazard +1 tape firmly after glueing. Patching holes n damage is easy. Contact cement the EVA piece in, tape firmly, let it cure. Remove tape n sand lightly to level. Replacing entire grip takes about 10hrs from start to finish. Severne camo grip easy to hide repairs.

Pretty sure the heatshrink gear has glue on inside. Stuff I've used on fishing rods did. So putting over boom grip n deciding later to remove may be an issue.

How harsh is this heat shrink tubing on the hands?

No glue on the inside of the shrink wrap, so getting it off later is no issue.

So far I haven't noticed the grip being harsh, and I tend to throttle the boom a bit. It actually decreases the diameter slightly.

I wonder if you could glue a strip of EVA on the inside of the boom before applying the heat shrink in order to make an oval shape like some booms have?
Does it hold up at least as well as EVA?

NB: I've had no problem using contact adhesive and the standard replacement boom grip it always holds if done correctly

Thats what I'd like to know.

No water ingress. And the grip seems to be more durable than other boom-grips.

I very lightly spray-glued the boom arm; while the glue "goes off", it has a nice slippery surface to slide the grip over.
It was interesting seeing steam come out of the tube as it heat-shrank.... I thought I cooked the carbon, but no.

I'm not looking forward to removing the grip - hopefully I haven't sprayed to much glue.

yep - most solvents are either water or alcohol; spray-glue usually uses the latter -> in my opinion, the heating of the heat-shrink hastens the evaporation, giving an immediate bond (thus not leaving areas to remain "wet").

I did use a flame-torch, which is probably a bad idea given the alcohol evaporation ... I have since purchased a heat-gun which appears to work better on heat-shrink [ than a naked flame ].

I left the boom with a slightly rough surface before putting the heat shrink grip and haven't noticed it twisting. Taping the open ends should reduce water ingress,I would imagine, but again I haven't noticed it. The shrink is very tight.
Also I would suggest a heat gun rather than a naked flame.

all spirits that are

all spirits that are a fair bit higher on the nasty scale than Alcohol (either ethylene or methanol) and pretty volatile so your flame gun is pretty risky! Could make for some interesting effects!

If you are worried about water ingress, buy heat shrink with glue inside. Use a 30-40mm band at each end of grip. It will seal the ends from water Its also a tougher harder wearing product than the patterned heatshrink.

You should be able to glue down the lifting area
Wash boom in fresh water and dry off
Then clean off boom area with white spirits or turps
Before applying make sure surfaces are clean and dry
Contact adhesive needs to be thin brushable type
Apply thin layer to both surfaces and wait 10 minutes before putting surfaces together
Both services must be completely touch dry before bonding together

Did you pull slightly on the grip? I got a regripped boom which was coming off. By pulling it more snug, it reduced the diameter and stayed glued. I sliced it every foot or so so I could work on smaller sections at a time. Cut a bunch off!

I have just regripped using 38mm electrical heatshrink. Neat and quick job and it appears very unlikely to slip or allow water ingress, but it feels as though it might be a bit slippery when wet. I have yet to try using it in the water. Before that, I need to reglue the boom ends. Does anyone know what glue to use to ensure that they remain easy to knock off again (per Severne Vimeo video from about 2013, I think)?
