A few years ago the boom grip wore away under my harness lines. I haven't done anything about it.
Just wondered do other people fix it? Patch it? Or just leave it be?

if its just a little bit, smidgeon of contact adhesive and fishing rod heatshrink over that section.

Never had that problem, I leave my harness lines a little loose on the boom so I can move them on the water if needed. They can rotate a little, and slide a little, when rigging/derigging but once kit is setup on the water they are good and do not move when hooked in, and do not damage grip on boom.

Now that is for the Sailworks Quicktune harness lines.

I'd use water based hobby paint and leave it in my bathroom to dry with the fan on for 6 weeks.

You can check if the fan is working by just cracking the door open and if it still smells in there, another 6 weeks.


BTW I should have said Mr Hoopers full regrip is bloody superb. Mine looks factory, cannot tell at all.

+1 for the fishing rod heat shrink. I put it on all my booms as soon as I get them new. Get it on E Bay. 40mm for booms with outside tail pieces. 50mm for inside tail pieces to get around the clips on the end.

I havent tried it yet, but read that the fix-all bicycle inner tube solves this. It happened to my boom last year and I keep meaning to put some on.

What about using a 10cm section of inner tube as a sleeve to cover the middle join in the mast to stop sand getting in, instead of duct tape around the join ?

It's almost as though inner tubes could replace Six10 !!!

I'm thinking inner tube likely to slip a bit? That's why I like the heatshrink and particularly if there's a tiny bit on contact adhesive involved.

However its a bit more slippery than boom grip so I'd minimise the use.

That's what Ben Profit suggested! Personally, I watch my extension and mast ends before assembling.

Otherwise, sand the mast sleeve down for a sightly looser fit.

Watch for sand inside sail sleeve too.

PS: Will switch to PVC tube on boom. Thickens diameter so lines don't swing and don't wear out as quickly. Even tube wears out and gets bunched up.

Inner tube is very slippery when wet, tried it years ago to stop harness lines cutting up the boom grip. My favourite stuff for things like this is Aquaseal SR. Anything from rebuilding worn out soles on hiking boots fixing holes in boards, repairing boom grip, cuts in wetsuits. I really does stick anything to everything and drys with a nice rubbery grippy finish. Found a crack in one of my boards over a year ago, put some of this over it for a quick fix to stop water getting in as it's all I had around at the time. It's still stuck over the crack, couldn't get it off if I wanted to

Built in self destruction ? No manufacturers would do that . They truly only care about us , long product life and saving the planet with less land fill .

Im coming over to live in your bathroom for 6 weeks.

I just wondered what others did or didn't, As I said mines been like this for a couple of years, hasn't damaged the boom. Probably go the lazy arsed simple option and leave it as is

lazy ass do nothign about it.

same as the severne boom clip housings that always crack. cracked many on my older 2012/13ish enigma. Replaced a few times but they just kept cracking. Bought a new boom last year, and its also cracked... You'd think they'd be able to fix that after 10years...

my first boom was made from wood and had no grip.

the worlds gone soft!!!!

wood is renewable by the way.

that's been my approach.

On a skinny boom it accelerates wear on the lines themselves and increases swing too.
Also, it may overly tighten lines making it harder to adjust as well as get bunched up with the grip itself.

If using a pvc tube, be sure to sand down any sharp edges!

Contact adhesive. Be sure to read the instructions before use, or just make up your own way of doing it. Whatever suits.

Tested it... It works. The lines are much easier to adjust but somehow don't rotate out like I was afraid they'd do. Cool!
