Can anyone recommend a boom. Want to get a small light boom for the wife. To fit small sails from 4.5 to 5.3. Will not be going carbon. Needs to be light, smaller size grip for ladies hands, and not to expensive as I want to get her a skinny carbon mast as well so the rig is nice and light.

Appreciate the advice

Don't get anything over 26mm for small sails. A little more expensive than the cheapest booms but it's worth it. Get the wave profile too, so the grip is a straight bar..

I've spent a fair bit of time teaching spouses, and she won't be happy if she sees a better boom on the beach...

+1 for the Gun Mono. I also have a very similar Naish which seems well made...

I had a $5 bet with Jesus that you'd come on here and plug something HotSails..

Now all we need is Steggles to come talk up Neilpryde and fat grip booms..

And Mark_Australia to come on and mention that colorful boards are too hard to repair and that everything should be flat white..

And I'll mention that all alloy booms are ladies booms, and people will get upset with me and say "I've been using my Alloy Zboom since before you were born rabble rabble rabble"

I think booms should just have plain black grip. When the most worn area is stuffed it is easy to replace just a section.

Barn - take your $5 and give it back to Jesus at Christmas mass, lest all the ghosts from PM33's neighbour's place come looking for you.
I think somebody had sand in his vag today.

Regardless what you think it is the exact boom they are after why can't I point them in the right direction others pointed them to Gun (interestingly I import Gun Sails products as well) them being in NSW they would be unlikely to buy it off me but rather off Hot Sail Maui Australia in Sydney so I have bugger all to gain from it. I did not even put a link. There was one put for windsurfing sales.

It seems to me Barn you prefer to have the forum censored so only views you approve of are posted it is rather pathetic.

Awww calm down Lego, I'm just having a laugh at the clockwork nature of these topics.. Don't get your Dacron in a twist

Yes Mark, all booms should be black!! Or at least lose the fancy stuff that falls apart.. The booms should then be sold with a generous sheet of replacement foam.

I've put my $5 towards a new GoPro, I'm gonna catch a 1080dpi2 picture of pm33's Ghosts!!

My wife uses a Hydrodynamix narrow diameter boom. It's not a Z boom. I bought it for smaller sails around 20 years ago and it is still going strong. Replaced the rope that goes around the mast a year ago as the old rope was looking a bit dodgy.

The missus has had a few booms in the past,

North Booms, Neil Pryde X3's (couple of these) and now has a nice carbon Chinook,

She is about comfort for sailing and likes a narrow grip, all three have had this characteristic.

The north delaminated, the rubber split one day and it started to peel off. The X3 cracked on the head (they had a hard life, so fully expected) and the Chinook is only 6 months old, but is easily the best quality, not necessarily the lightest, less flexy of them all.

I would buy the best one you can afford,

I have heard good things about Severne booms,

Get a kids boom. They are small light and cheap. Probably limited to about 150cm extension though.

I have heard good things about Severne booms,

(Good review, I've seen the NP issue (and those who remember I was proved wrong on NP quality), and the Norths seem to all delaminate)

Severne? well now that you mentioned it, and since we're blatantly plugging our financially favored products, teh Severne alloy wave is 26mm, and it doesn't have any of that yuck tapered 26>29 rubbish, which I've found to be uncomfortable and a major weak point (I've destroyed many 26mm alloy booms and wouldn't recommend them to heavier sailors, or light guys who are super mad extreme!!!1)

All that along with the all new refined boom clamp and the no nonsense grip, makes the Severne Metal a great package for all your Xmas stockings, unless your a Fat Ass..

Tell your local dealer Barn sent you, for a bonus fish tank with live barnacles..

I've heard that Barn doesn't need to use a "f@&kn computer", he uses telepathy.

Don't buy her a cheap boom . Buy her an expensive boom , rake in the browny points , and when she isn't using it you might be able to find some use for it

I rarely agree with Barn but this time I do.
I'm a lady with small hands and I like the 26mm grip and I really like the new skool wave shape with the straight arms. The aeron v grips feel really good too. 140 - 190 fits everything from my 4m to my 6.4.
I don't think the brand matters, just get the size right, and preferably get a colour that matches her sails... Colour is important to ladies.

Yep, same here except it wasn't 20 years ago, more like 10, and it has a nice clamp on head. (not sure about this rope around the mast, was that 20 years ago?)

Two loops of rope go around the mast and then loop around a knob. You then lever the rope tight. It looks like it's modeled on the original clamp on boom system. I had an old Chinook boom that used a similar mechanism. The system works okay.

I am with Windextasy, I use an Aeron 26 - had it for years - got it second hand in 2008 and I sail very regularly. It fits all my sails 3.7-4.7, nice skinny grip, light and has held up well for my use - waves and bump and jump.

Most important thing for us females is skinny grip and light, not that sure if I agree that color is important

I dont usually notice colour but when I got my latest 4.8m sail I suddenly realised the sail was blue with a yellow lightning bolt pattern which looked great with my blue board..

Interesting that went away. I wish they'd all go back to that system, as relying on the thin plastic that goes around the mast looks a bit sus. Especially when they don't hinge it (like an aeron I saw the other day) so you bend the plastic back n forth every time you rig and then expect it to hold the boom to the mast.
