I saw this on you tube and found it interesting. It would be harder to reassemble things like he says when you are on the water but worth trying..Anyone used these methods?
I snapped mine on the way out once and thought "all good, I'll just sail back with the good side". Worked great until the force snapped the good side also. Also went through the sail :(
Good vid. Yip I've had several booms go on me (averaging 1 a year), swapping the boom over works really well, even planned back with half a boom once. You don't want too much back hand pressure and accept you will loose ground downwind. I can verify that the boom swap (asymmetric boom) technique definitely works
Wish I'd seen this before the whole side of my boom snapped off out off Coal Pt. I ended up getting help from a 50' cruiser. 2nd thoughts it was blowing 25kts + and very choppy so not sure if I could have swapped boom over anyway..
you can weld the arms back on in a jiffy out in the water if you use your lazer eyes. If your lazer eyes get wet and dont work properly you can always just fly back to shore.
I don"t think this will work in rough conditions. As an emergency you would be much better off to release the sail and paddle to the shore. Safety first!!

Snapped a boom arm once in 35 knots on the lake and was able to hold on to the broken parts in each hand well enough to sail back to the shore but couldn't use the harness so I was totally stuffed when I got back
I'll take a broken boom arm any day over a broken inhaul line, that's the worst, there's nothing like having your booms fall down onto the deck of your board all of a sudden.
just remember to attach the front of the broken arm (cause it doesn't eject like on the clip..) with the harness line (around the mast and attached to the good arm left) so it doesn't bounce back and forth and puncture your sail...
if there was fresh water around would you rinse your boom? I tend to think especially on aluminum booms that salt congregates inside and eats the boom inside out..it's difficult to find corrosion especially under boom covers..I know they're annodized but still
