Hi all,

I'm looking for a solution to extend a boom only by 5-10cms max. The obvious answer is to find a boom end that is slightly longer (and will be compatible) to my fairly old aluminium boom. I don't want to invest in a new boom for the sake of this much extra length (don't be naaaasti ).

This will resolve a camber that won't rotate well enough because I can't quite get enough outhaul. Perhaps it's also the Neil Pryde sail with the flex top that isn't helping but a boom extension rather than a new mast is worth investigating. I'm not trying to set any speed records with a perfectly trimmed out rig.

How do these things work?

Are you required to have an extra piece of aluminium to slot into or do they provide just that extra length required? perhaps you can cut the end of your boom and insert them into the gap??

I've read a few threads here but they were more about adding 15 to 20cm rather than a 5-10cm. It did get me thinking about the extra load on my boom.

They do not add length, best advice get someone to checkout your setup, if tuned right it's much more fun than close enough.

The chinook device is just to replace the clips on an existing chinook boom. It won't extend the boom at all. Older booms - pre-1995 or so, had varying tubing lengths and those could also be fabricated. Not really possible with current designs. You our best bet might be to have a sailmaker add a clew grommet 10cm inside the current one, removing the last few cm
of the sail along with the current grommet. You could perhaps even just fold that section over since it's so short. Ugly but cheaper than a new boom.

10cm is a lot.

I have extended boom end tubes to get an extra couple cm, but that's on carbon and not 10cm. I think its a bit of a gamble, esp as ally doesn't last so this extra bit (if you achieve it) might bust it.

Old aluminum booms are a gamble at best, extending one and using it with a race sail is a recipe for a swim.
