What gaps do people have between each board? I currently have a 95L board and am looking at a 115L board. Is this too close a gap?

I use a 90 ltr board for light wind days, a 90ltr board for medium wind days and a 90 ltr board for when it's really windy

haha yeah so do I but prefer something bigger when its dead offshore. I weigh 75kgs if that makes a difference.

i weigh about the same, and i currently have a 75L waveboard, 92L FSW, and i did have a 110L slalom. I found it wasn't really big enough gap between the 92L and the 110L. I was using a 5.9 power wave sail with the 92L fsw, and a 7m race sail with the 110L, the bigger gear was only planning marginally earlier, so i rarely used it. Problem could be my technique thou, really heavy sail, etc never got a good pumping rhythm going. Thou in light wind the big gear was much faster once it got going.

I'm looking at getting a 120L board + an 8m sail now as my bigger gear.

But I think you need to consider the type of sails, and board width as well.

I think it depends on the board!

im only 70 kilos, so i ride a Tabou 76litre 3S (freewave),

and for my wave board im on a Tabou Pocket Wave 69litre!

As long as you have width, you should be ok!

I use a 161 litre board when it's windy, and a 130 litre board if it's really howling.

I use a 93L S-type in all conditions and three sails (5.0, 5.8 and 6.6 koncepts + 5.0 and 5.8m older type - 2000 to 2002 - wave sails for different days.) pretty much do me completely. Every now and again though when some of the bigger guys cant get planning on their big gear (8 or 9m sails and big free ride or formula boards) they'll lend it to me (very good of them) and i can usually get it up pretty comfortably in next to no wind. I do also have the option of my brother 114L naish supercross and dads 158L JP freeride but never really use them much anymore. Only dads big board if there's nothing around. Dads also looking for a 120-30L carve or something to replace my brothers board which will be great also!!!

However i'm looking for a smaller board when i've got the cash for it. Thinking of a low 60 to 70 L speed board... missile, isonic or equivalent. Not sure though, any suggestions..? got the s-type as a one board fix but I will always keep it for going out in more wavier stuff and just its general ease of use and versatility.

I think a 20L gap, as you have suggested, is fine

My waveboards are 80 / 90 / 100 L

This season I used a 93 RWW as my light/onshore board and an 84 Guerrilla wave for higher wind/bigger waves. Seemed to work ok however I have recently changed the Guerilla for a 73 Radical wave just for a change but haven't used it much yet. (I'm 82 kilos)

I think board width and style are factors too not just volume.

1 x 80l 2003 F2 Maui Project wave board (blowing really hard but rarely get out on it).
1 x 101l 2009 JP FSW (anything over 14-15kts)
1 x 170l 2006 Starboard Go for really lightwind cruising and getting the little guy out. (up to 25kts)

I am seriously thinking about replacing the wave board with a 77l Fanatic freewave - don't have proper waves where I sail and also getting a 10+m sail for the big board - currently only use an 8.5 on it.

Ha-ha...same here Willy, mine's a 165lt 'cruiser' & 127lt cross for windy conditions...luckily for me, when it's really windy, a mate borrows a 99lt & I 'borrow his 111lt...or did, now he's got himself a 92lt I can see myself looking for a 100lt (ish) board real soon!

I sold all my Formula gear a few weeks ago. The 161 litre board is a Mistral Super Vision; it's only 69cm wide so I get the freeride board feel with a lot more volume for early planing. Seems to be working well.

I'm only using an 8.5 sail or smaller now, so I'm not the first guy to plane, but when it picks up to 10 knots I can fly.

my mate uses a 100 litre starboard sonic board and a 6metre sail in all wind conditions from 15 knots thru to 35 knots... he's a bit rough around the edges mind you.. haha

I used a starboard carve 99 and 5, 5.8, 6 and 7.2 metre sails depending on the wind... can sail in all conditions... also have a 76 litre wave board which is skinny and i use that only when its 25+ knots...

I'm 85kg by the way.

I have a F2 Ride 116Ltr and a Naish Hawaii 8'5" ( red flames one ).
I have a 6.9m and a 5.6m for sails.
I'm 95kg's so need some strong wind to get out on the Naish.

It isn't too close a gap. At 100-104 kg, I find I can use a board which is 100 liter or less when in steady winds 25 m.p.h. or more. If faced with the prospects of a lot of lulls or the possibility of the winds dying completely, but the winds are still howling in the mid twenties or more, I will take out the 110 liter board. If the water isn't too rough, but the winds are still strong, I use a 125 liter board. However, I don't see many days that require these boards.
