Hi all,

I am just starting to get back into windsurfing after a long break, but the board I am going to use has nose damage. I was interested to find out is anyone had some useful tips for repairing thins kind of damage? not sure what to fill the nose with before fibre glassing over the top any help would be much appreciated.

I would just buy some cheapo filler (Q cell and polyester resin) and fill/fair the whole thing. Probably don't even need to glass it after that.

From the photos it looks like thermoform construction so glassing it like you would a composite board doesn't work very well. Mainly because its more difficult to get a reasonable area of overlap and bond.

That is a nasty injury in an old board. You could probably pick up a board like that in good condition for less than it would cost you to repair that one adequately. Check the buy & sell on this forum or visit your local recycling centre.

what state are you in?

chuck the board out and then visit your local w-surf shop. you can probably get on the water for $2000 for brand new kit and less than $1000 if you get 'pre-loved' gear.

even 2nd hand gear is pretty user friendly and (mostly) good quality now.

Not everyone has a spare $1k for the odd bit of sailing on a nice summers day! He might have all of the gear already and so a cheap fix would be the answer.

Would it be easier to cut the whole nose off with a saw and then glass over? I think I recall it was very hard to get anything to actually bond to the plastic skin.

Thanks for the help guys, just wanting to get back into it and have all the stuff at home in the shed all be it a bit old but it should get me back out on the water and see if I still love it as much as I did before I go out and buy new or near new gear.

Given that even if it is repaired properly the board is not worth much, and it is hard to fix that kind of construction well I would seriously consider taking offer of a free board of similar size / age on here.

If you do fix it, will be about $30 - $40 to buy the smallest epoxy kit and some q-cell from Fibreglass and Resin Sales in Kewdale.

I would not use polyester resin as there is the chance of a polystyrene core in that age board and polyester resin will melt it. Use epoxy.

However if it is just to get you on the water, all you want is to make that nose watertight. You could even fill the whole thing with silastic and once it has set just tape well with gaffa tape to be sure it is sealed up.
Really don't see the point of a pretty repair on an older board.

Thanks so much for a ll the help guys. I think i will have a go at fixing it up still, If it dosent work i will have a look around for another board. I have some glass matting and some Q cells so just need the resin.

Hey guys, thought I might give you an update on how its going. I think it has turned out OK, will definatly get me out on the water. Just need to give it a quick spray to cover up the repair.

There was time that I used to damage noses due to catapults quite often, so on my all boards I did apply protective nose cone made of fibreglass.


To do nose protector I
apply plastic wrap to the board nose
do two or three layers of fibreglass cast/mold
remove to cut to size , sand and paint
stick back to the nose on resin




This home made nose protector never failed me and you are most likely to broke a mast or your board in half next time before crack the tip again.
