I attached harness lines today. As I removed the end of the boom, I noticed that there were plastic bits that remained inside the boom. They were shaped to fit inside the hollow of boom extension (is that what it's called?), but did not come out. They slid around inside the boom.

My questions: What do these bits do? Are they supposed to be attached to and come out with the boom extension. I tried to fit them back onto the boom extension when reassembling, but I don't know if they'll stay there, does it matter?

I don't think they effect the functioning of the boom, just interested to know. Appreciate any feedback.

could be a water seal, that's supposed to stop the whole boom filling with water.
Give us the make and model boom, that may ring bells with somebody.

yep, chickster they are commonly called a pointy plastic thingy that helps with the insertion of the boom rear end when it is disassembled.

they tend to drop off in time and should be thrown at the dog or used as replacement barrel bungs at the jack daniels brewery.

nuffin better than tossin dem barrel bungs.

with the technolimits booms, they have foam wich runs up tube, so when the boom extends, and there are holes showing at the end of the boom, water doesnt feed inside the boom, and wieght it, as well as sink it when its in the water.

i would guess this is the same think in your boom, just plastic not foam, and instead of being in the extendable bit, its inside the bigger tube.

My boom has the white plastic foamy stuff inside the extendble (smaller tube) bit.

If you're talking about short (30-40mmish) plastic 'bung' things that fit inside the end of the inner(extendable) ali after the foam stuff is in there, then they're there to help the two tubes slide past each other, and to stop the ends of the extendable part scraping up the inside of the outer ali tube and promoting corrosion.

Fish them out, put them back on the ends of the extension part, and then find yourself a nice fat nail to 'punch' the ali with so that it gets a couple of dings, and pinches down on the plastic.. Glue works too, but I've found that the 'couple of good smacks with the nail' technique has been very effective on my HPL.

Usually they come unstuck when you collapse the boom to it's shortest possible length, and the ends of the extension section try to go around the curve of the boom. The plastic bit gets a bit stuck in the curve, and comes off when you re-extend the boom.

nah im year 11, not 12 so i got next week and thats its. also we are like 8 days behind the southern states

Ha! I think you're right !!


So, now that I understand about the boom construction, I had another look at it today and managed to remove the plastic bits. I didn't need to use the nail technique and create some dings to reattach them to the extendable bit, I found that a gentle wack with a hammer got them on fine. Once on it really helped the reassembly.
