Ok, they are "Battens", not "Batterns", or "Battons", or (god forbid) "Batons".

There's only one spelling: "Battens".

Singular - B A T T E N
Plural - B A T T E N S

See, it's easy.

Unfortunately they're (insert "there" or "their" also depending on your personal preference ) not battens and are technically called (left); a bargeboard or barge fascia & (below); a fascia board.

America - f$%k ing the English language since 1776

spelling is one thing ...

terminology is another
here some people call the boom a "wishbone"
others think they are talkin about chickens

pronunciation is another thing completely
if someone is planning on a new board - would like to see them plane

perhaps if all this "bothers" people that much
make videos like this one
spelling and pronunciation - all in one
(put some pics and all will be talkin about the same thing)

Well hell, all this time I was figuring that "batterns" was the Ozzie word for "battens", so I was just letting it ride, along with "kit", which we usually refer to as "gear", or "equipment", or just "stuff" or "junk".

Somebody posted a vid here awhile back that was about the Ozzie words that are unique to Oz, as explained by an attractive brunette, it was a hoot.
