I meant wondering if there was some artistic license, as is "let's make up/exaggerate some personal tension/relationship stuff for the sake of the movie."
I think it was pretty real. I mean the dude didn't get an invite back. If it was just "reality TV" they could have had him along for the next leg and played up some artificial tension on the water, etc. As an armchair therapist, it may have been that Naish was going through a period of changes especially in the personal relationships dept and Kai leaving after all those years, he may have not taken it well. He may have looked at it less as a child moving on to bigger and better things and more like a lieutenant moving to the other side. Lenny at the time was like 30? Certainly time for him to move on and create his own brand if those were his ambitions as he's certainly earned the right with his accomplishments.
I think it probably started as a documentary about some legendary watermen on a great global quest but, as the cameras rolled, it morphed into something else with the weather disappointments, injuries and relationship changes. Sometimes in that business you have to capture what is - which may not be what you wanted. Otherwise, you are indeed creating the equivalent of "reality TV".
Of course, everyone has their own truth and despite the director's best efforts, it's common that someone will feel like there was some artistic license taken. It did seem to fizzle out at the end and maybe that's more about Naish having gotten older, more vulnerable and learning a bit to accept that he was no longer a champion but an older guy out to get the most he could from the conditions. It also faced the reality that his original choice to ride the longest wave, a paddleboard, by the time the film was finished, was no longer the best choice for that goal as Kai could surf circles around him on his foil, imho.
I think for a lot of his older fans, we could identify with what he was going through on some level - aging f***s with your mind as it doesn't age the way your body does and for some of us, it's difficult to accept that the body is no longer up to the task.
