Anyone have any experience with different types of ankle braces, for windsurfing? I've done some googling and come across a wide variety of things, but not many that seem sufficiently low profile. Any comments appreciated. cheers, alex

One idea is to learn how to do a diy strapping job. It will provide more support and be low profile. Just takes some skill to do and takes a little longer. May be possible if it's just one ankle. There are a lot of YouTube instructionals on ankle strapping.

There some thin foam stuff with a weird name, filo pastry or something, that is good to wrap your ankle with before taping.

I tape my knee with duct tape every sail, the stretchy stuff, its cheap and might be ok for ankles.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a qualified orthopedic surgeon and some of the other DIY medical work I've done on myself didn't go so well.

I bought a Mcdavid ankle brace when I went to Maui last time. I was only 4 months out of MAJOR ankle surgery and everything held up ok. It was neoprene with very strong elastic that wrapped around your ankle in all different directions and secured with Velcro. It was actually extremely supportive. They have different levels of support and the one I bought was a medium support. It worked very well in the footstraps too because it didn't go too far down your foot. Highly recommended.

Ive used ankle braces a few times for long term injuries and this is more than sufficient. This is the one im currently using.

In fact this had no grip issues in a slalom comp i went in recently and was reasonably comfy. You can really tighten it up to limit movement. Sand gets between feet and strap so you could just put some tape on top of the foot or around it to limit any rubbing.

You can't let an ankle brace slow you down.
