Hello Peeps; How common is it too need 3-4 cm. more onto the Extension to get great loose leach?
I'm dealing with a 2010 Ezzy 7 Freeride and a 9.2 Sailworks, which are on the proper masts and are in great condition,
Both sheets have printed marks so I'm confused.

Rig it until it looks right and works correctly. The printed numbers are rarely right on.

Just bear in mind that Ezzy sails dont set with the same amount of loose leech as other freeride sails. They are shaped differently with a lot of in-built fullness, the battens dont extend around the mast like others. I've had loads of 'experts' tell me I needed more downhaul.
I've not had 1 Ezzy sail where what was printed on the sail wasn't accurate, if used with the correct Ezzy mast. When you say the proper mast are you using an Ezzy mast?

ps and outhaul specs. they need outhaul.

I bought the Ezzy due to its specific and detailed tuning needs, as I first rigged it the immediate curves and shape are impressive.
My mast is constant curve SDM, 460, with 75% top bend and 62% bottom.
Essentially, I have reefed it down to max = the black line - light wind - leach marker.
By Max I mean the padded bottom of the sail is where the rubber top of the base joint comes up to.
I used the black string for outhaul and I like the fact that the battens do not touch the mast.

The sail is mint; however, with this amount of tension applied can these things stretch a miniscule bit overtime?
My first ride in light wind was great - I was laughing out loud - so resetting the extension is not a big deal, yet they make them to be detailed in the tuning so I'm asking around.

If you arent using the Ezzy mast, then you cant rely on the printed specs. Your mast has a bend curve characteristic of 13. The Ezzy RDM 460 is 15, more flex top.

3-4cm extra downhaul sounds like too much to me. Just 1cm takes me from medium to maximum.

Top section % - bottom section % gives you the characteristic.

ps, I think the sail will still work on your mast, but you will have to play around with the settings to find out what works best for you. That goes for any sail even on the correct spec mast. People are different weights & sizes, sail on different boards and sail differently.

Does the sail have marks ( 3 dots ) on one of the top panels where leech should extended to?

since you are not using Ezzy mast you should downhaul by using the leech marks and disregard the mast extension settings.

also measure your mast extension to near the top of the pulleys from bottom of mast to make sure it is what it says it is.

Yeah, I like it.
After years of blasting around with beat-up sails and old carbon boards this little up-grade will pay off.
Guys like Ezzy and Peterson at Sailworks go to the trouble of making the leach marks so I will obey them.

PS, These modern style sails really are artworks.
I get a kick out of watching the early 80's vids and imagine what this tech would do.
Plus 1981 as the mystery year for boards and a little later for sails seems like the equivalent of 65 to 68 for electric guitar.

And on most extensions you have not achieved the number you desire unkess you get pulley to pulley contact.
Then thats still missing a bit if measured to the centre of the pulley axle.
I think ive added 2-3cm on every wave sail i ever owned
With the dumb chinook extension a few years ago it needed so much extra due to poor design i dunno why they even wrote numbers on the extension

Same as Mark above, on Severne sail/ext I generally use the next setting up. So if recommended setting says ext 4, I'll have it at 6 and then not pulled all the way down to the pulleys because that is really hard to do and puts a lot of extra stress on the ropes and everything.

The sail might be sitting 1 cm higher that way but don't think it matters too much or in my case it's better than having not enough down haul for sure.

Sails can stretch and need more downhaul as they get older.

Do sails stretch? When my Ezzy Lion reached 100 sessions I re-calibrated it, using the leech dot markings against the downhaul gauge at the extension. It was still spot on.

At almost 500 cm's; I would not blame a 15 year old sail - or it's maker - for stretching 1 cm.
Even though it looks brand new.

So long as mast is fully in. You can measure your extension from bottom of mast to top of extension pulley. On sails with Vario top the strap can slide.
As others have said. I like to keep +2cm to have some room. Then there's mast top cap thickness, mast actual length + sail stretch.

At some point you have to rig the sail until it feels right for you. I have many Ezzys and I rig them with a few centimetres more than recommended downhaul 100% of the time. They feel right to me when I do this, and I get great performance from them (along with all the other Ezzy benefits).
