Very curious how many of you have the 115L Naish Starship model? How early can you get planning? Please share your weight, sail sizes, fin sizes and where you sail in order to get out planning early.

I've been impressed how easily my 100kg mate gets sailing on his wide naish Titan

with the ongoing discussion on the early planing of the starship. Can you give us an indication of who else is planting/ not planing what gear weight sail etc. often helps get a feel for conditions

I wish I could be of more help with that question, but I am the only windsurfer on my lake. I have a buddy that only comes out when it's crankin out, and he's usually working or out of town when it's windy out and misses the opportunity. The others kite and there are only 3 of them around here. We're a small bunch. But stay tuned, in about a month the NW winds will be in full force and I will be shooting lots of gopro footage of me planning on my 115L Starship in 10-15 knot winds, and bump and jumping on the 15-20 knot wind days. It's gonna be a sweet season here coming up, so stay tuned for some epic footage.

I have always been a fan of Naish boards. They always get it right with their board designs and shapes. They got me hooked and I have no problem praising them for it.

They could bring out the Naish Magic Ride. No wait a minute, that wouldn't be right.

There are extremely few Naish boards around here. I think I have seen about 5 in my whole windsurfing career, and 3 or 4 of those were their early 2000's stubby nose speed boards.

I guess there are very few in the whole of Australia as well and they have had a patchy run with importers/distributors.

And since I note that they do not make a serious slalom board or any speed boards now...... Meh..... No interest.

Guessing ,because I sold mine to a mate that broke his board .felt sorry for him ,but have another on the way

but when I had it ,with a 40 fin ,and a 7.0 sail ,I don't own a 7.5 ,which the board will handle
at 95 kgs ,I got planing in 15 knots ....if you had a 7.5 which the board will handle .
And weighed less .poping onto the plane would happen earlier .and would stay on the plane

it has a very narrow tail ,so it's not really going to be a early planner.but a great board .

i like the starship shape and is a great chop eater ,but my Titan 130 with a 8.5 ,12 knots.up up and away
And it stays there .

not as exciting to ride I might Add.

I'm taking mine out tomorrow. Wind is forecasted to be 15-20 knots with lots of gusts. Do ya think I can plane in that?

That's a shame there isn't a quality Naish distributor in Australia. Surprising actually!

About 5 years ago I picked up one of the old Naish Hybrid boards (93litres, 210cm long, 57 wide). It was my go to high wind board. A few years later I picked up the 110 litre version of the same board. It is now my favourite board for most conditions. It has to be one of the most versatile boards ever made. I can get the 110 on the plane in 10-12knots on a 6.6 Hucker, in 15-20 knots it becomes a great bump and jump board on the 5.6 Hucker, and I've cracked 35 knots on flat water on the same 5.6 Hucker.

I know I'm not really answering your question Magic Ride but I weigh 73kg and if I'm using the 110 Hybrid with a 30cm slalom fin I can bear away in 10-12 knots on the 6.6 Hucker and get it planing. It's not the most exciting ride but it's nice and light and very responsive.

I too am a huge Naish fan, we just don't see much of it in Oz.

Bit of feedback on the starship 100 too (sorry not the 115) ,Naish deffo got it right with the starship. I two weeks ago sailed it with 6mtr maxed out and on a 27 fin it was so good then last Friday was on 7mtr powered up well and with a 34 straight fin . The board was real good with 7mtr but 6.5 would be sweet tho and wow it jumps so well ! At moment ive got foot straps out and right back but am waiting for some waves so can set up with small fin (24) and straps forward and in .I'm just loving it !

115 Starship & 90 kilo owner here. This board is used as my moderate wind board 19-25 knts with sails 5.0-6.3 & fins from 30-38cm.
I've read in another thread where you're able to plane in 11-12 knots. Maybe I have a bad board?
It takes me 13 knts to plane with my 80cm wide Futura with 9.2 sail.
The Starship is a great board & oh so smooth over choppy ocean! I use it whenever possible if conditions exists.
BTW, if you want to plane early, try a freestyle board. I can get going with almost a meter less sail!

Thanks for loading that article by Eddy at Bigwinds. I ment to do it but you beat me to it. This is a wonderful review from an experienced windsurfer who shares his passion for windsurfing. Everything Eddy writes in this article about the Starship is true, and me personally owening a Starship, I can vouch for that. Truely an amazing board! It's also truely amazing to share that there is a short, narrow board with minimal volume that can plane in the preteen wind digits.

He doesn't mention how gusty the Gorge is and it can be 20 knots on one side of the river and half that on the other until a gust comes through. Again I'll spot you a six pack of beer if you can plane on your Naish in 10-12 knots of wind with a 6.0!

Magic, what are other sailors on when you get planing. Are others using 130, 145 litre boards? 8.0 or 9.0?
I suppose that is the real question. It is impossible to guess wind speed, I believe you are talking about wind speeds where the water state is still quite calm. Intermittent white caps, not consistent white caps. No small children getting blown away (only by you on the starship).
Comparison to other local sailors must be the only true measure.
On the swan river here in Perth there are hundreds of windsurfers. I have got to know that I am one of the last to plane so I often rig for more power. I am 95kg however, and many others are 80kg.

I can plane in 10-12 knots using a 6.8 sail not a 6.0 sail.

But the gorge would be a great spot to win that beer because of all those gusts like you mentioned, but wouldn't be a fair win. A fair bet would be 10-12 knots with some 15 knot gusts mixed in along with an 8-9 knot lull. Yes I will fall off the plane in a 8-9 knot lull. But pick up the plane at 12 knots and plane it into the 10 knot range and hit a 14 or 15 knot gust, and plane it to a 11 knot range and so on. That's how it's done realistically at my lake.

I'm pretty much the only windsurfer on my lake. I have one other windsurfing buddy who joins me, but only when it's 15-20 or 20-25 knots out, and if he is in town to catch it. He is usually traveling and misses those good days. My other buddy is out as much as me, but he kites. There are 2 more other budds, they kite too, but aren't out as much. That's our group, very small. But Klamath Lake is one of the best places I have ever sailed. Great consistent winds. Lake is 22 miles long and 1-5 miles wide. But the algae picks up around mid June into July because the lake is only 15 -50 feet deep. Warms up fast, but collects algae. They harvest the algae here and manufacture it into algae tablets as a nutritional supplement. But were die hards here and sail when algae is here.

You're under estimating the wind.
