I love the gopro max as you are always capturing the shot, you the scenary or others. It will also function as a 2D gopro, but I never use it like that.
I agree with thedoor. He has it on a stick on his back, but on a stick on the back of the boom is also good for checking your stance and balance. On the mast at the boom or higher is also good. In 360 you are filming yourself and everyone around. I never use hero mode either.
If you are going for the GoPro non-Max, be sure to get one that has built-in GPS. Max also has GPS. You will want to see your speeds in your videos. I do, anyway. The earliest model that included GPS is, I believe, the GoPro 5 Black. 15 months ago I wrote a review:
