hello, I'm looking to buy starboard foil x 145 board and pair it with starboard race foil with 1000cm2 front wing. Would it work and how it perform in course racing?

It's only 71 cm wide so I expect it to be harder to leverage and utilize the 1000 cm2 race front wing to its fullest potential, compared to a race board of 91-100 cm width.

Not saying it won't work, but a wider board (especially tail) will work better and be more competitive in a racing setting.

FWIW I've used 1000 cm2 SB wing on old SB formula 167 board and while it was a fine setup, having a dedicated race foil board with 1 m wide tail is a huge improvement. The 167 was around 86 cm wide at "one foot off" measurement.

I can foresee a number of problems.


like formula said, it lacks the width to match the 1000 wing (starboard have the width listed as 74cm wide?) it doesn't mean you won't be able to get around with it, but when you start pushing harder you'll find it harder to muscle the foil around with your feet. Sometimes you'll need to roll the foils position quite suddenly. That's going to be much harder to do with this setup. Generally you need to at least match the foils width tip to tip with the board width, even have a bit more board width there to make it doable


the foil x looks to have a bit of tail tuck (the rails curve inwards at the back and the rear foot straps are more inboard) this will somewhat reduce your ability to point upwind as compared to a board with parallel rails and more out board straps. Having parallel rails allows you to hold a straighter stance and exert more weight on your back foot, which means you can tune the foil for more upwind lift

lastly the foil x looks to have tracks. that in itself might not be a problem provided the tracks are built in strong enough, but there can be a significant amount more force exerted on the board with a race foil as opposed to a smaller wing. I've heard that tracks built in properly can be stronger than the traditional deep Tuttle foilbox, but I've also heard plenty of times they're not.

I've used the millennium 1000 fw on my foilx 125. However for free ride glide rather than racing.
i used it with a 95 + fuselage and its far enough forward to give a decent front foot pressure but not too overwhelming.
I feel if the fw was further forward ie on the 115 + fuselage, you'd find it difficult to control, as the mast foot would be almost on top of the fw

you would definitely need a high modulus Tuttle mast to run the1000 fw

I did this very thing with a similar board (Exocet RF71 2021, almost identical specs to FoilX145) with a Starboard 1000 Millennium front, classic 115 black fuse and 255 tail. It was a very light day and I wanted to see if I could pump it up to fly using a v.1 Ezzy Hydra 6.0. It worked great, definitely lifted early (not quite as early as a low aspect foil) but the overall speed and glide was WAAAAY better. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would and thought it was a viable option for light wind free-riding that was preferable for me than using a huge low aspect/slow foil and/or big sail. As others have pointed out the lack of board width means you won't get other advantages of the wide-high aspect wing like crazy upwind angle/etc, but if your goal is to get out and fly around in light wind at highest possible speed with minimal board and sail, its a good setup. Only disadvantage is jibing is a little awkward, need to make a wide turn and pressure the rail carefully.

Good to know that it works for you .. but it's quite normal that it works better with the RF71 .. it's really a Freerace board and even if it's only 71cm wide ... it is still almost 70cm on your back foot as the rails are quite parallel ... and the mast rail is far forward compared to the SB Foil X.

I'm still surprised that SB 1000 wing works well on such compact board, I found it very tricky to control with my 81cm Freerace board when sailing sideways .. more difficult then the 900 et 800 wings .. so it is really a powerful up/down wing for course racing.

For sure I won't recommend this 1000 wing for the foil X board.
