I have this poor old art pro 1051 with trailing edge damage which a couple of hacks have tried operating on only making it worse.
I feel like trying to build out the void of missing space will never match the other side and i'm thinking it's gotta be symmetrical to work.
So, should i get the grinder out and chop a new radius on both sides to match and make it about a 950?
If so, whats the best chopping tool, grinder cutting wheel then sand round and smooth?
Will i be chopping into core this way and must re-seal with epoxy?

You might be into the core with a cut that far back if so I would use a chopsaw and just keep it somewhat square Naish used to have a foil called the MA with square tips it would be a lot less work to make it look right by keeping it like that. With that much damage why not experiment!

You'd be well into core so I wouldn't.
I would rebuild that TE with glass and bog to reshape. Then, many of those split the LE along the mould join line, so go over the whole thing with a layer of 2oz glass so it wraps from the LE to the rear and holds it together (and supports the new work filling that big hole)

You could try to cut it and sand down a strip 1cm all the way around, then wrap in a layer of glass/carbon and epoxy set it up... see how it goes... but you should keep both sides symmetric of course!

Sounds like a plan i could possibly handle. Thanks. I've done some decent repairs but this one i'm not sure how to build it out.
When you say bog, you mean epoxy and qcell? I'm just not sure how that would hold while trying to build out. Maybe i need to try and feel it out as i haven't worked much with bog.

I need to get my ratio's right. A mate gave me a surfboard to fix once, i added lots of qcell to big hole, it went like a volcano, smoke and pretty much fire. Sent him a vid of progress, he didn't see the funny side at that point, but i fixed in the end and painted a pretty picture over it so all good

ya this is my concern, matching it. A plane with one wing bigger than the other just wouldn't be right.

Does it work now or does the damage make it fly with less stability?

I'm not at the level of being able to tell if it's me or equipment yet, i've not tried using this or similar foil. Got it used.
Just learning winging, starting gybes, switching feet, wanting to get to 22kts peak speed (because that's what i got to on windfoil and want to compare feeling) for winging using HPS980 and 830 (1300-1000cm), HPS series is not a super high aspect foil. They are HA, but nothing like this Artpro which i've heard is much harder to ride?
But i want more speeeeed!
Keen to give it a crack, but if it feels wrong, at this point i wouldn't really know so i'll try and make it atleast look right before trying.
The other thing i thought of doing was taking out the other side to match
Windsurfing bum on a tight budget, stoked to find there is so much used Axis stuff out there, there are probably many damaged foils sitting around, learning to fix them would be a good way to test what feels right i'm thinking. Unless it feels wrong, then that would not feel right I don't know, it's all good fun.
The HPS's i got also used and are in super good nic.

The bottom is near flat so stick a bit of rigid plastic on it then laminate the glass on that - say 2x4oz
then build on the top with bog. Pull off plastic. Now you only have to shape the TE the same as other side and foil shape on top
once you are happy, glass over all with a layer of 2oz.

I can see how to do this mostly, but not the feathering out of final glass layer. I don't know how to feather glass when it is higher than the rest of the surface. Sanding nightmares thinking about this bit.

I was *fixing a cracked rail on the Skywing board so used some bog on the foil while at it. I taped the top side of foil and slopped some on the bottom side, rather than use plastic i can use this now to support bog, and sand flat, hopefully.

This is probably a thread showing how hard it is, and how not to do it, or how impossible it is for a hack

I was warned before getting this skywing board that the rails are soft and i'd get some glassing practice Looks like i need it aye, super rough, wow.
Little chance of this bird flying smoothly i think. I'll keep chipping away at it and see.

if it's too rough and doesn't work maybe i'll chop still and seal the ends. I've had some success doing something similar before using suncure and glad wrap to make nice round radius and no sanding needed.

2oz glass is only about 0.05 mm thick. If you feel it would really matter, sand the bog down a touch before applying.

I'm really curious about what on Earth went wrong with your Qcell experience? I've never seen anything resembling volcanic behaviour from Qcell! Magic stuff to use, even for a rank amateur. Start with a small amount of epoxy and keep adding small amounts of powder and stirring, until the consistency is as desired (probably a bit stiffer than toothpaste) then apply to the job; you can even incorporate the glass into the qcell patch (with edges extending beyond the patch onto the original glass surface), just ensuring there's enough bog over the glass so you can fair it by sanding back the excess after it cures. Unless you're using a huge amount or very wet mix, I can't imagine it getting hot enough to cause a reaction with the foam in the board?

Was a deep hole in surfboard, so could have reacted with foam. I'll try to find the eruption vid. Probably as entertaining as what trying this foil is going to be. Really I want to chop it for cheap speed, bad idea I know.

The area where it has sat since is not technically the area of the camp known as 'the too hard basket', but it's been pretty comfy hiding in that spot since applying a glass layer on the top side, being supported by bog on underside.



I decided the sharp edges of glass were a bit dogy leaving in that location, might spike my wetty or something.. So i took it out and cut and sanded edge a bit. To my surprise i thought i might actually have a chance of this working. But anyway i put it back there for now.

Got it out of too hard basket again and sanded for about half an hour. Took it out on a good day and thought i was going to crack 20kts. No it didn't but i did get speed PB and had great fun riding it, 38k's distance and it hardly faltered.
I could feel some vibration, the aluminum mast had a very furry trailing edge so maybe that didn't help.

In theory it is a real bad way to try out a more advanced foil for the first time, because it's going to be in ya head that it's got issues.
However, i like this style, like a mongrel dog, i don't have high hope and it exceeds.

I generally find trashed/repaired gear is always faster. The bad has already happened, so no smash the gear fear.
