Which 2021/2022 Foil Board should I get next?
My beloved "Pheonix" FMX 91 Hyperion has had 3 "nose jobs" (see previous threads), and has developed a loose foil box and started a 1m long delamination on the hull. Don't get me wrong, the FMX construction was amazing, it has just had to deal with a LOT of abuse (those who know me will know what I mean!). Hey if your not falling your not learning!.

Anyway what I have on a short list are shown below. Let me know if you have ridden any or I missed one??

So far I'm leaning towards the flat decks of the Phantom 85 or Patrik 85. Availability will of course be an issue!

I would recommend considering the 2022 Flying Camel 187. They have put some serious work into the new shapes, and I think it looks great. I've been very happy with the 145 model from last year, but the new profile looks a lot cleaner to me.

Edit: Especially if construction is important to you. I've had some almighty smacks on the nose of my Camel. Its cracked, but none of the big separations that I've seen others do.

AHD Compact 83. I cant comment on its slalom potential but as nobody has mentioned it. I'm a complete beginner and have been crash testing one. Its full carbon so I put a Unifiber nose protector on, mast protector with added padding. 1 small dent in the front from my 1st session before I added extra padding on the mast protector. A few small harness hook dents from climbing back on.



I bought on the following criteria:
1) I like the colour
2) It got a decent writeup on wind foil fans website. Although they didnt recommend it for beginners I thought I'd get one as I knew I would pick it up ok and the idea of just getting 1 board to learn and keep sounded good. So far so good.
3) AHD boards are GBP1400, the same as other brand's heavy duty cheap versions
4) There werent many others available due to supply issues
5) I like the colour

Our local heavyweight test of kit's construction Garry has a Tabou Air Ride.
He damaged the nose on his the session he lost his custom built nose protector. Seems you need some sort of nose protector on these boards. The deck also cracked around the edge of the recessed mast foot 'hole'. That Fanatic's looks very deep.

Also depends on sail sizes/wind strength and program (slalom/racing or LD/speed). Certainly for the latter the move away from the (even initially entirely arbitrarily set) 91cm width is evident. Also good to check TWS trainings at El Medano--always a good window into what might be ahead.

Too many options. How about quality? Which board isn't made at the Cobra factory? Future Fly I think is made in Vietnam. Please comment on superior build quality, especially in the nose area for crashes.

Yes--FF made by Kinetic, most others by Cobra (which doesn't mean they're all the same as different brands may use different spec sheets). Regardless though, no high-end carbon race board will withstand a full-on smash on the nose.

I would go with the products from kinetic in Vietnam, quality is better, so FMX, Future fly and AV

The right nose protector will prevent damage to the nose, and allow you to drag the kit with board upside down into/out of the water over anything, pretty much, the 1/16" thick plastic top layer handles anything I have dragged it over.

A wide board will take more sail to get up in light winds, flat deck good to prevent mast hitting it, and a rounded nose good when dropping into waves to surf them intentionally, or to avoid a crash. But I do not know how a square tailed board handles surfing waves, that is why I like slalom style boards like the Goya Bolt, Patrick makes one too with a foil box. Gotta love a light board, Bolt 135 at 7.6 kg.

I've ordered a '22 Fanatic Falcon 81. Delivery date is approx March 22, but given I've been waiting 5 months for a Duotone 520 mast I'm not confident. WSS has a '22 FF 100 in the shop so they're in production. Fanatic foil boards have gone for max width to the tail (parallel rails). Starboard have always had a narrower tail than the max width. Not sure who's right or if it's a personal choice. Construction cutaway shows pvc on the deck. The '21 Falcon fore deck only had a sticker then sushi grade carbon on top of the EPS. It was very light but very fragile.

Any of them will be great. I was going to go for a Patrik Comp 91 wide & FoilRide 125 but Patrik suggested that the FoilRide 145 was the way to go. I'm using Patrik Race Foil too and they go together very well -mast 95, Fuse 115, Wing 900 & stab 250. NP V8 Flight sails. Me 95kg. Flying gybes just about there. FoilRide has lots of strap position. Build seem great so far. No damage to nose yet. Plenty of width to lean over & rocket upwind. 5 foilers at my local spot.

"sushi grade carbon" love it!

On my 91 FMX with small wings (F4 420 or 337 front) I noticed I sometimes set my front-foot more inboard (twisting heel inline with board) to prevent pushing too hard on the rail. Hence why I'm thinking about the narrower boards for top-speeds!... also some threads suggest the smaller boards fly earlier due to less water resistance/drag.

As to the tail shape, for slalom, I think a little pin-tail helps, but not too much!

The 2020/2021 Patrik Foil-Ride (105, 125 and 145) will be called 2021/2022 - now - Foil-Race (125, 145, 165) after some minor changes.

"Below" them is the "new" Foil-Ride - a bit longer than the "old Foil-Ride".

But both lines are produced by Cobra :-)

and as I mentioned he had impressive results on IG Foil starboard gear as well, but still it has to be more than a coincidence that Phantom rises to the top in PWA Foil racing in three short years, with new Foil, new Boards, and new Sails, these products were not on the market, and immediately after introduction, winning word titles. Yes, of course Goyard could win on any board, he has already shown that result.
That fact does not take away from the world best results of Phantom's barnstorming introduction into the market of it's Foil, Board, and Sails.
Truly impressive technology and design.

I do own one of the first boards that Goyard did very well on in 2018 (2nd place) in foiling / when foiling championship kind of started. Don't know if I can attribute much of my skills (or lack of) to the board. Just saying.

Well, if that's your criterion than the only other board worth mentioning would be the Fanatic Falcon 190, with which Pierre and William respectively finished 2nd and 3rd in the PWA Slalom, and Marion 1st in Women Foil. All three also on Lokefoil and Duotone though...
