Hi all,

I want to come over and have look at the place (Perth) this summer and do some foiling on the Swan River. I've also got some questions below so would appreciate any responses in relation to any of them.


Where are the best spots to foil on the Swan River in Summer and Winter ?
How strong is the average sea breeze in summer, and is there wind nearly every day ? Is it also 6 months of the year that you get sea breezes for (October till end of March) ?

Whats winter like for wind , are there many days around 15 - 25ish knots or stronger, what are the predominant wind directions, and is it crazy gusty on the swan river or not too bad for foiling ?

Can you foil all the predominant wind directions for both summer and winter ? Are there many access points to the river to foil from ? I'm guessing there are probably just a few that people use ? What is the water state like in strong wind ? Are there wind directions where the water state is relatively flat for foiling (ie 1 foot or less) ? Is it deep enough for foiling pretty much everywhere ? What angles are the main wind directions ? Ie cross shore , cross on, off shore, cross off etc ? Does it get crowded or is there enough space for everyone? Are the runs a decent distance ?

this area is called Melville Waters, its where most of the sailing occurs on the river. Generally good sized runs in most directions.



Blue: predominant summer wind direction (ssw), generally around 15-25 knots through summer. It rocks up fairly reliably each day.


green: winter direction when its usually good to foil. But far less reliable, usually around 10-20knots, but days when we get that, and the direction are few and far between. Wind direction/speed through winter is quite variable.


red circles are peli point and "foilville" where a lot of us foilers sail, mainly because they have favourable conditions for leaving the beach.

i'd come over in summer if i was you. No guarantees on wind through winter.

River sessions so far this year.
Winter storms are sometimes epic, 1 to 1.5m windswells in the middle of the river when it's over 25 knots.

I'm assuming the 7 blue dots on the river bank / shore are where you've launched / gone out from ?

You're also doing a good job of colouring in the foilable area of the river. In another 6 months you'll probably have it done.

1.5m wind swells...I'm gonna need a longer mast. I'm thinking 110cm. Maybe longer.

Yes launch spots - this is on freeride gear, the race guys launch from different spots and usually out in lighter winds.

90cm mast is fine

Yes launch spots - this is on freeride gear, the race guys launch from different spots and usually out in lighter winds.

90cm mast is fine
