I have i76 and i99. Since losing 11 kg (now 78kg) and getting used to using bigger sails - up to 8m foil specific - I havent had reason to use the i99 even at 10 knot average. When I was heavier the i99 made all the difference in light conditions though.
Big foil specific cambered sails are a revelation. I have recently been using a GA Air ride 7.7 (2 cams) and a Challenger foil race 8m (4 cams). The stability and apparent wind you generate in nothing is remarkable. I know lots of people think i76 doesnt work with big sails, and it doesnt if you leave the mast where it is with small sails, but put it in Position C (assuming B works for you on small sails), and its great. They are a huge pain to uphaul though, but fortunately thats a fairly rare thing for me to do in light winds. Not sure what the biggest sail that would work on your board is though.
I will give the i99 a go sooner or later in light conditions with a smaller sail (6.5, 5.7) and see how that works, but I cant imagine gaining much. The key thing you get with i76 and a bigger sail is higher speed, and this carries you through lulls - whereas the i99 has more drag (and more lift) so you cant get the top speed so high, but whilst ever you are moving forward you have some lift. The i99 will literally keep you up until the board is almost stationary, but it will become almost stationary sooner due to the drag and lower top speed.
With the i99 and my hybrid board (blast), I tried it recently and the lift of the i99 was too far back for me to really get anywhere through the jibe in the C position. I can also get the i76 going in much lighter wind than I used to, because I lost weight as well (95kkg > 85kg or less). It just takes pumping. With a foil specific board like he has, the pumping may not be as hard as the Blast, because there's more volume in the rear.
The i99 feels very slow compared to the i76 or the starboard race foils. I'm just keeping it around for when I get a wing, because with a 5m or 6m wing I'm pretty sure I could get it flying in very little wind.
For his purposes, it may be good to just get out there and see if he can really extend his light wind pumping. It takes a while (did for me, and I've still got a ways to go).
